Mikey realized how valuable the friendships we make during our travels are. He told CNN, “When traveling you meet so many people with interesting and outstanding things to share. This tragic accident has shown us and reminded how many people we have touched along the way.” It was a blessing he had a lot of Facebook friends that were online when he posted the SOS. If something like this happened to someone whose social media following isn’t large, they might not be so lucky.

“Without technology and friends we would have not survived. Without the people we met along our adventures we would be much deeper in trouble and less of this magic you give,” Stacey told CNN. If this had happened in an era before, it would have been a true miracle for Mikey and Stacey to get help. It’s already a miracle that Mikey had put his American phone in his pocket and was able to use it!
