As the wedding approached, Charles started feeling anxious. Sally Bedell Smith, a royal biographer, claimed in her book about Prince Charles that Charles was always in love with Camilla Parker-Bowers, his ex-girlfriend. He was forced to marry Diana and end their engagement by his father. Smith claims that the Prince screamed the night before Diana’s reception. After the births of Prince William and Harry, Charles rekindled his romance with Camilla in front of the entire world.

Designers were rushing not only because of Diana’s gown but for another reason as well. Diana was a little taller than most people, so she preferred flat-heeled shoes. “Her worst worry was that she wouldn’t be taller than Prince Charles, so the shoes would have to have a short heel because she was too tall — 5ft 10in,” said Cobbler Clive Shilton. Almost every pair of slippers was both informative and lovely. Each one-of-a-kind silk slipper was embellished with 542 sequins and 132 pearls, as well as a “C” and “D” written on the shoes’ hidden arch and a love heart.
