This young collector was genuinely interested in the painting he recently bought from a junk auction. He only bought it for two dollars, but somehow he felt that there was more value to it than meets the eye. He assumed he would get a little bit of cash from it. However, he did not know its real worth. That’s why he was shocked when he decided to get it appraised by an art expert. Everyone was astounded to find out who actually painted it.

A Very Special Interview

One day in 2013, the cameras started rolling for a particular show. David Weiss was a well-known appraiser who has examined a lot of vintage items in the past. It was just a regular day and no one knew that something special would happen.

A Knowledgeable Person

In the American edition of the Antiques Roadshow, he was the most knowledgeable appraiser in drawings and sculptures and had many different meetings with auction houses. Sitting across from the appraiser was the kid who was carrying the frame. He was noticeably quiet throughout the show. After a couple of arrangements, the specialist started his business.

It was amazing that such a young boy had so much curiosity in antiques. Although he didn’t realize how much the portrait was worth. The only thing he knew was that it was a fascinating item. At the very least, he’d potentially get a decent sum of cash for it. The reality completely blindfolded him!

All appraisers understood the crucial part of their position, particularly in front of the camera, where they had to learn the story of every item they were reviewing. It should also be evaluated equally, and some characteristic feature of the item could be indicated.

The Standard Procedure

How does an assessment session work? It was important to understand as much about the item as possible. They would ought to closely check any single part of the object that they may have. Both the Antiques Roadshow appraisers had to follow certain basic operating practices to do their job properly. It’s not about them either. Even less popular appraisers prefer to do the same things, after all. It is a fascinating career that observes essential laws and needs a certain degree of accuracy. Not everybody should be an appraiser!

For Only Two Dollars

The boy had to take a long drive and had to travel all the way to Richmond, Virginia to figure out how much the two-dollar painting was worth. Isn’t it incredible to know the luxury things end up in thrift stores? In certain locations, unreasonable prices are provided that do not represent their true value. This was how the kid wound up making an entrance at the Antiques Roadshow. He had charged two dollars for the portrait, but it was worth a lot more than that.

More precious objects would end up in thrift stores or unscrupulous antique shops, but most of the products were not valued regardless of their success in those stores. The little boy in the series, though, did the same thing as he did on the Antiques Roadshow network.

Traveling Appraiser Docu-Series

Shooting started in 1979. The Antique Roadshow programme. The show was developed when a traveling appraiser and antique dealer who came to visit them was influenced by the documentary series. Production has been trendy and has given rise to several other divisions within various nations, such as the United States.

Can you believe the Antique Roadshow began back in 1979? The display was influenced when the team encountered a travel antique collector and appraiser. It was a British exhibition, initially. Output has began to trend and has had an effect on many people from various areas of the globe. As the boy was on the program, he was fortunate enough to join the show that was so relevant to him. After all, he realized it was the major leagues when it came to some antique series!

An Expert In The Field

David Weiss was an expert with a large amount of expertise of European art. He’s worked in the industry for more than three decades. His specialty tends to be European paintings and sculptures from the 19th and 20th centuries. We can see why he was appointed to examine the image of the young child. When it came to this area, he was a real pro. Knowing this, we can’t help but ask what price the painting was worth!

Like the majority of the Antiques Roadshow appraisers, David Weiss interacts individually in the TV show. In reality, his primary work was at the Freeman Auction House. There, he kept the position of Senior Vice-President. In our view, due to this previous experience in the business, he merits a high place like this one! This was his work description while he was located in Washington, D.C.

He usually gets excited when he noticed a special thing that just showed us how committed he was to the work. He commented about this in his profile segment on the Freeman Auction House website. He said, “For me, the most satisfying moments as an auction house appraiser are the happy, unforeseen ‘discoveries’ arriving from private collectors and estates. The greatest and most unforgettable of these ‘finds’ has culminated in tremendously good prices being realized.” It’s made its day since this happens!

It’s impossible to figure out anything about the item without talking to the creator. Of necessity, Weiss starting asking the young boy questions regarding the portrait in question. He might discover more about its roots this way. The appraiser began the interview by telling the young man, “You must be the youngest collector I’ve seen.” That made the boy grin and said, “I think so.” That wasn’t the only explanation Weiss was so fascinated by him. Aside from his love for antiques, the young man was also very well educated for his generation!

The appraiser also realized that the young man was collecting products longer than he had expected. Many of the older antique owners have purchased antiques because of their popularity, not because they keep them in their possession. Any youngster, though, would retain the item found for themselves, since they might find that it had a positive significance in their lives.

The guest demonstrated a lot of experience in the area by informing Weiss that he had been out until September before selling the silver. Over all, that was because he expected that the stock price might shift.

Boy Bought $2 Painting That Turned Out To Be Worth A Lot Of Money

Is It Valuable?

For the spectators who viewed, as well as for David, the thing the kid held in the show looked like an ordinary painting. The assessor recognized, though, that each item had a symbol that would signify whether it was worth it or not.

About A Mother And Her Child

A lot of people wouldn’t realize there was something unique about this painting. It was just an ordinary painting, to the naked eye. Weiss realized, though, that the boy had a remarkable talent. It was probable that his gut instinct was right, but it may have been incorrect as well. The expert stared at the portrait and noticed the natural colors of the earth. It seems, though, that the young boy has missed a crucial hint that might lead to more details regarding this item.

At this point, Weiss always decided to test the boy a bit further. He needed to see how much the youngster learned about the arts. The specialist was shocked by how calm the kid had been all the time. It was also obvious to him that no ordinary child will make an offer on this portrait. The boy responded that after purchasing the painting, he discovered that it was made of aquarelle. He did not figure out anything more than that, though, as the painting was enclosed in glass. This is where the specialists in art have come in!

The kid was correct on that guess. In reality, the medium of painting was aquarelle. Isn’t it a nice thing that somebody so young should have found it out? Let us not ignore that he learned a lot about silver, too! Clearly, the young man was doing well by himself in the world of antiques. He was young, but he also lacked the same amount of expertise as other collectors. Despite this, he did not hesitate to inspire Weiss with all the things he already learned. It was evident that he had the makings of an appraiser!

Before he took the drawing home with him, the boy stared at it and made an appraisal of it. He realized that there was a message at the bottom of the painting. However, only part of the signature was identified. Right then, Weiss knew the full name of the second part. It just took him a look to find it out! Apart from appraising drawing, he decided to help the boy develop his field skills. That was why the expert requested the youngster to repeat what he had just said.

David wanted his image to be written about so they could assess the child’s painting. He’d like the boy to explain what he might see in the painting and say the history of the picture. The Painting By Albert Neuhuys

This occurred before they could examine the portrait that the boy had with him. First, Weiss needed to talk more about it. He requested the young man to speak as much as he could about the art work. After that, the expert noticed that this was more than just a fleeting hobby for the boy in question. In his opinion, he might always say that in the future, the young boy would make an outstanding appraiser. After everything, the boy was able to explain the signature in great detail. However, he did not work out what the artist’s first name was. This was when Weiss told him of his full name. It was Albert Neuhuys.

The Painting By Albert Neuhuys

The Painting By Albert Neuhuys

From The 19th Century

Albert Neuhuys was a great Dutch painter of the 19th century. David Weiss clarified that this artist also created drawings portraying life at home. The drawing the boy took to the exhibition was a fine illustration of this. It was a scene of a mother and her kids. The painter in question took up painting in Laren Academy, a colony of Dutch artists. He studied there with the likes of Jozef Israel. Neuhuys had to switch from a pastoral existence to a more industrial one. After making this move, he did more art with as much zeal as he could.

Peaceful Daily Scenes

Albert Neuhuys was willing to paint as frequently as he liked throughout his lifetime. It was really his source of revenue! Much of the time, he presented the everyday home life of different individuals. As you already know, this was the topic of the drawing that the boy brought to the Antiques Roadshow. It was a lovely piece of art that depicted a mother weaving while her child was observing her work. The artist often preferred to paint domestic activities in rural environments, such as farmers employed in the field. Many of his paintings are displayed in museums of art. How did one of them end up in the hands of this boy?

It goes without saying that David understood more about the artwork and the creator than the younger one did. This was crucial when you were analyzing an item. He was talking about who Neuhuys was until he disclosed his value. “Neuhuys was a Dutch painter. He was born in 1844 and died in 1914. I believe your aquarium was actually made in the last quarter of the 19th century,” he said. Before that point, the boy needed to know how old this drawing was. The specialist could see that this was taken seriously by the young man. The young man, on the basis of his own expression, listened to every word.

Making The Young Man Guess

There was nothing unusual about the show’s experts challenging the guests to guess exactly how much their object was worth. The fact is, there’s nothing strange about these people having a higher estimate, too. Much of the time, they’re sure that the item will help them survive. Unfortunately, this is rarely the case. Now that David Weiss was finished sharing further detail regarding the drawing, it was time for the boy to make a guess. This was a perfect approach, so he could understand more about the area he was so involved in. How good did he do now that he understood something about the object in question?

Weiss asked him, “How much do you think is worth it? “Let’s figure out if the kid had it right this time around. He will assess the young man at any chance and see how well he understood the area. It was obvious that he had strong hopes of drawing. After all, they wouldn’t have taken an hour-long trip from New Jersey to Virginia if it wasn’t the case. The young man thought about it and then made a guess. He said to Weiss, “Hundred and fifty bucks.” Did he have it right? Let them find out about it!

“Hundreds of fifty bucks? “David Weiss echoed the young boy’s comment. Suddenly, the expert said, “I guess it’s worth a hundred and fifty. I believe it’s worth more than a hundred and fifty.” Considering this, the excitement of the young man did not alter at all. He just let the appraiser test the object a bit further. All present was eager to learn what Weiss had to suggest about it. He said, “Today, if your Albert Neuhuys aquarium comes to the sale. It’s possibly going to go for $1000 to $1500.” The boy couldn’t conceal his shock when he heard Weiss say, “Thousand.”

As a matter of truth, the young man could not say anything but “Woah.” This phrase fell out of his mouth when he realized how much it was worth. Weiss blew his mind with his portrait assessment! And if he didn’t think it was right, the specialist assumed the child was a natural boy. Of course, he always had a lot to practice before he could reach the major leagues. “This is a lot of capital! “The young boy responded. Who would have figured he might make a thousand bucks with a drawing he received for two dollars? David taught him a short lesson before the display came to a close.

A Bright Future Ahead Of Him

The boy was the youngest celebrity ever to come on the program, which is remarkable enough on its own. David Weiss then told him, “So I think you have a wonderful future as an art dealer. You’re allowed to hold it.” We’re confident that the young man was moved to know such a thing. He said, “I know.” That wasn’t all of it! The youngster also said, “I hope I’m going to be wealthy. “The specialist could not help but comply with that. Apart from that, Weiss told the young man that he was doing a decent job for his generation. As long as he polished his innate ability, he might make all his wishes come true! Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex & Expo Center hosted Antiques Roadshow. It is a popular reality TV show that had drawn in more than 5,000 people. All of them had been hopeful about the value of the knickknacks that they brought with them. They wanted to know whether these objects had any real value or not. Rose, like everyone else, patiently waited for their turn to talk to the appraiser.

Despite this, she had always been curious to see if it had any monetary value. Was it nothing more than a pretty painting that got passed on from one generation to the next? She was not sure which was which, but she was about to find out.

The truth was that they did not even know if it was a print or an original painting. No, they did not have the slightest idea how much it was really worth. One day, she started to wonder if it was worth more than they thought…

This was the moment that Rose noticed a tiny blemish that spoiled the painting! She brought it outside so that she could get a better look at it in the sunlight. And then she saw it. This meant that the artwork was now exposed to the air and sunlight! What now?

As Rose inspected the insect, she realized that it was a mosquito. She gripped it between her forefinger and thumb, lightly grazing the painting with a knuckle. All of a sudden, her heart began to pound against her chest. She placed the mosquito on the flowers and then replaced the glass on top of the painting. She later said, “I took it out to the front yard and I opened it up to get the mosquito out so I could take it with me to college, and then it kind of scared me a little. I closed it back up immediately because it looked like it might be real.” However, she did not get to the bottom of things right away.

They would hunt the area close to his home since his family lived close to their reservation in the state of New York. However, was it authentic? And if it was, how on earth did her grandma get it in the first place?

Rose went on, “And that’s what that little circle under his signature is.”

Hilferty nodded and told Rose that she was correct about the history of the artist. On top of that, the appraiser said that there was a chance that the painting was the real deal considering the location of her grandmother at the time of its acquisition. However, she asked Rose one last thing that had the viewers at the edge of their seats. “Have you had it appraised before? Do you know if she had it appraised?” Hilferty asked Rose, who gave it some thought. Her reply turned out to be rather controversial…

Her Reaction Became An Internet Sensation

More than four million people across the globe watched the video on YouTube. They, like her, learned about the real worth of this painting. Most of them had lovely stuff to say, attesting to the honesty and depth of this lucky heir. “It was interesting that her first reaction was an expression of loss despite the value she learned the painting has. She said, “So, I can’t put it up?” and shed tears,” one person said.

What The Commenters Had To Say

This commenter did not stop there. “Meaning, the painting reminds her of her grandmother and because of the high value of the object she can’t risk it being stolen. She must place it where it will be safe from thieves but away from her eyes. She can’t see it every day and think of her dear grandma. Very sweet reaction,” they added. However, there were some people who were less happy about it.

Some Of Them Were Disappointed

A number of viewers expressed anger and dismay that the first two appraisals of the painting had been so wrong. “What kind of appraiser just assumes it’s a print?” a commenter asked. There were others who wondered if it had been an honest mistake or a scam. Others said that maybe it went through an evaluation at the hands of a general appraiser while conducting an evaluation of the house. At any rate, we may never know the truth. Rose had only one thing on her mind when she learned of its value…

The Damage Was Not Intentional

“Should I have left the mosquito in the back?” she asked. Rose must have felt anxious about the way that she exposed the artwork to light and air. Hilferty comforted her by saying, “It’s actually not a bad idea that you took the bug out.” The master appraiser went on to explain why this is the case.

“Ultimately, we would like for a conservator to do that but the bug could have continued to cause a stain, but no. It’s good that the bug wasn’t there anymore,” she said. It was easy to spot the relief that took over Rose’s face when she learned that it was only right for her to trust what her gut told her.

It Turned Out To Be The Right Call

In the end, it turned out to be a great idea to get the bug out of the painting. Hilferty explained that the mosquito could have left a stain that would require the services of a conservator otherwise. Despite this, we can’t deny that its removal led to a two-fold effect. While Rose saved it from more damage, there was one more notable role that this annoying mosquito played in the story.

Nothing More Than Pure Luck

The small and insignificant mosquito had a big role in the story. After all, this was what made Rose think that there was more to the painting than meets the eye. If it had not been for the insect, she might never have known better. She would not have checked the painting or bring it to Hilferty for a third evaluation. Commenters immediately pointed out, however, that it was time for Rose to make a big decision about the painting.

It Was A Daunting Decision To Make

What will you do if you find yourself in her shoes? Are you going to keep this heirloom that you received from your late grandmother? Or are you more interested in giving it up to take home a lot of money? This would be a good way to pay off your mortgage or student loan. On the other hand, you can also use it as both a decoration and reminder of a deceased loved one? For a very long time, Rose had no idea that she was sitting on such a fortune. This is what made her reaction so priceless! Even so, there are people who are aware of the value of their art works and try to hide it from the rest of the world.

He Did Not Expect To Hear This

His world changed when he received the call. In fact, he was taken by total surprise when the FBI told him what his aunt and uncle did. He simply could not believe it. After all, he thought that he knew them so well. There was no way that they could have actually pulled off one of the most infamous crimes of the ‘80s… right? In any case, the call planted a seed of doubt in his mind. This only begs the question: how well do we actually know other people? Do you even really know your friends and family?

They Had Been Hiding A Huge Secret

Ron Roseman was a Houston resident who thought that Jerome and Rita Alter were model citizens all his life. They were admired in their community, for one thing. On top of that, they were schoolteachers who saved money so that they could travel the entire world. Ron had always been amazed by the stories that his uncle shared with him. However, he only learned the biggest secret of their life much later on.

Just Like Any Other Couple

If you looked at the Alters, you would think that they are regular middle-class folks. They moved to Cliff, New Mexico in the ‘70s. Jerry liked art, adventure, and traveling. Rita, on the other hand, was always known to be a kind lady. She was a speech pathologist, which already says a lot. On top of that, she supported her husband when he left his music teacher position at 48 years old to pursue other things.

The Truth Has Finally Come Out

The neighbors knew and liked the Alters, but they said that the couple preferred to keep to themselves. No one knew that this couple had been hiding a huge secret. In 2011, Jerry died of natural causes. Rita followed suit only five years after him. They are survived by two kids: Joseph and Barbara. Upon their death, Ron was assigned as the executor of the estate simply because he was the relative who lived closest to Cliff, New Mexico. If it had not been for this, their crime would never have come to light!

Hoping To Get Rid Of All Of It

Ron put up their home in Cliff for sale and asked a bunch of dealers to drop by and assess their things. In a matter of days, most of these objects were already gone. He sold the pieces of furniture, paintings, and African artifacts to the highest bidder. A man from Silver City called David van Auker claimed everything for only $2,000. We are sure that Ron was relieved to get everything off his hands so easily.

The truth is that Ron had been hoping for much more than that. However, he was happy to get things done with as soon as possible. He had no idea that there was a priceless object among the loot that this antique dealer bought. Ron had no idea that the item in question had been the subject of an investigation for the past three decades. In fact, it went on to blow the case wide open!

David van Auker had been delighted at the deal. He was happy with what he got for the price that he paid. While he was inspecting and sorting all the items, there was one thing that caught his eye. He could not help but glance at it every so often. His gut was trying to tell him something about him. However, he only figured out why this was the case after he started to delve deeper into it.

He tried to forget about all the items in the meantime. It had been a long day, and David just wanted to get some rest in his Pinos Altos home. The following day, however, one of the pieces became the talk of the town. It was his good fortune that an observant artist walked into Manzanita Ridge Antiques, his antique dealership. This man told him five words that made the seller get in touch with the FBI.

He Just Could Not Believe It

“It’s my favorite aunt and uncle,” Ron recalled. “You know I couldn’t imagine… you know scenarios running through my head… I felt like a deer in the headlights.” In the beginning, he refused to believe what he had just heard. There was no way that Jerry and Rita actually did what the FBI said they did, right? It seemed ludicrous to even think about it. However, the reality eventually dawned on him.

On That Fateful Day

This story started on November 29, 1985. On that morning, a security guard opened the door of the biggest and best-known museum in Tucson, Arizona. He allowed a staff member to go in. It was still early in the day, which meant that visitors were not allowed to go in just yet. However, this did not stop one couple from approaching him and striking up a conversation.

The woman looked like she was in her sixties and idly chatted with the security guard. She brought up just about everything under the sun. They discussed the weather and the art works. He had been so distracted that he did not notice a man go in and head right to the third floor. A couple of minutes later, he reappeared by her side all of a sudden. They then hastily retreated into their two-door sports car.

The security guard could not help but feel as the couple did not even stay to check out the place. There was an odd feeling in his gut as he went on to investigate. Back then, the museum did not have security cameras like we do now. He only realized what took place when he saw the empty frame on a wall on the third floor.

The Painting In Question

One of the paintings disappeared! It was “Woman-Ochre” by a famous Dutch artist called Willem De Kooning. The only thing that remained was the rectangular canvas where it had been cut out of the frame. Sadly, the police did not find any fingerprints. They had nothing to go on, save for the description of the getaway car and the couple that the guard provided. They did not even know the plate number.

Woman-Ochre By Willem De Kooning

Are you familiar with the artist? If not, there is no need to fret. Willem de Kooning was an abstract painter who was a part of the mid-century expressionist movement. His paintings fetch a lot of money. In fact, one of them went for $137.5 million. For 33 years, the “Woman-Ochre” art heist had been unsolved. Things changed when an unassuming dealer realized that it was sitting in his antique shop.

He Was In Complete Disbelief

David van Auker did not think much of the abstract work of art that he bought at the estate sale. This only lasted until a customer saw it and told him, “That’s a Willem de Kooning!” Who would have thought that someone would ever find such a valuable piece at an estate sale? It only occurred to van Auker just how lucky he got after doing some research. His jaw dropped when he stumbled upon an article that talked about the theft of the painting from the Arizona Museum of Art. Could it be true?

How He Kept The Painting Safe

His astonishment turned into fear once he realized what he had in his hands. He knew that he had to keep it away from the eyes of greedy people. How ironic is it that the bathroom was the only room with a lock in the store? There was no other way around it, so he locked the 40” x 30” painting in there. The shop owner explained, “We were afraid someone would bash it or flick paint off it so that’s when we decided we would pick it up and stick it somewhere safe.” The next thing to do was call the museum.

After Such A Long Time

“I had daydreams of getting that phone call, of someone calling up or someone mysteriously sending a package and the painting being inside of it,” shared Olivia Miller. She is a curator at UAMA. She admitted, “I don’t think I honestly thought it would actually happen.” It was only natural for her to feel skeptical at first. However, van Auker then told her a detail that made her change her mind.

What Made Them Believe Him

“The thing he said that really stood out, that made me – I was taking it seriously but really made me stop – was he said there are lines across it as if it’s cracked like it’s been rolled up,” said Olivia Miller. “Ok, that’s just a detail that – nobody could just say that.” This is when Chief Brian Steastone received a call.

It Took A While

For more than three decades, Chief Brian Seastone had been looking into the theft of the painting. He knew, deep in his heart, that the case was going to be solved sooner or later. “I just had this feeling,” he said. “So, 32 years later I got to see the tears of joy and happiness as it really did come home.”

It Had To Undergo Authentication

They had to carefully examine the painting. In the end, they determined that it was authentic! Yes, the De Kooning was indeed the real deal. But the most surprising thing about it was that the Alters hung it behind the bedroom door for more than three decades. They made sure to hide it from the rest of the world. There was also evidence that pointed that they were the ones who stole it from the museum.

The Painting Was On Private Display

“My personal thought, and it may be totally wrong, but when I first saw where the painting was hanging in the house, it was for their private display,” said Buck Burns. He is the co-owner of an antique store. He went on, “Not for anybody else. It was hung behind that door and when that door was open nobody could see it.” If you ask us, the most unbelievable thing is that it was hiding in plain sight in a way.

Right Under Their Noses

In 2011, Jerome “Jerry” Alter wrote a collection of short stories. He gave the book the title “The Cup and the Lip.” There is a short story about a mom and her daughter stealing a 120-carat jewel. They pulled it off by distracting the security guard at the museum and then riding away in a getaway car. Once they got home, they placed it in a secret panel so that they could get to look at it for their own pleasure. That sounds uncannily similar to what must have happened with the De Kooning painting!

Not The Only Evidence There Was

Despite all of these pieces of evidence, Ron Roseman still refuses to believe that his relatives have any involvement in the heist. “I just can’t imagine that they would,” he explained, “That wasn’t the aunt and uncle that I knew.” We are sure that it is hard to believe that someone you loved was different from what you had in mind. In 2018, however, they found incriminating evidence against the couple that shut down any room for speculation.

Yet Another Smoking Gun

You see, they discovered a photo of Jerry and Rita Alter that pointed to their guilt in the case. Dated 1985, it was shot on Thanksgiving in Tucson, only a day before the theft of the De Kooning painting. Recently, the FBI discovered yet another smoking gun in the case. They found a photo in the personal collection of the family that made it clear that Jerry once cruised around in a red sports car. It fit the description of the getaway car that the security guard provided down to a tee.

There Was A Resemblance As Well

There are also people who think that the police sketch of the culprits looks just like Jerry and Rita Alter. It was rendered all the way back in 1985. Are you convinced yet? If not, you might want to think of how two teachers with modest salaries came up with enough money to travel extensively and buy a 20-hectare property. We do not know about you, but it sure sounds sketchy.

It Has Since Been Safely Returned

The investigation has not yet stopped, but there have been no arrests made so far. We might never know if Jerry and Rita Alter truly pulled off one of the biggest art heists of the 20th century. However, the evidence points to the idea that they did. Most incredibly, they seemed to have gotten away with the crime. The “Woman-Ochre” painting by De Kooning has since been returned to the museum. We just hope that they will keep a better eye on it this time around. After all, it is believed to be worth more than $160 million!
