If you looked at the Alters, you would think that they are regular middle-class folks. They moved to Cliff, New Mexico in the ‘70s. Jerry liked art, adventure, and traveling. Rita, on the other hand, was always known to be a kind lady. She was a speech pathologist, which already says a lot. On top of that, she supported her husband when he left his music teacher position at 48 years old to pursue other things.

The neighbors knew and liked the Alters, but they said that the couple preferred to keep to themselves. No one knew that this couple had been hiding a huge secret. In 2011, Jerry died of natural causes. Rita followed suit only five years after him. They are survived by two kids: Joseph and Barbara. Upon their death, Ron was assigned as the executor of the estate simply because he was the relative who lived closest to Cliff, New Mexico. If it had not been for this, their crime would never have come to light!
