Tom Selleck is mostly known for his iconic mustache, and his portrayal of numerous characters such as Thomas Magnum, Police Chief Jesse Stone, Dr. Richard Burke, and NYPD Commissioner Frank Reagan. As one of Hollywood’s most respected actors, it goes to show that Selleck’s own personal life tends to be hidden from most of the unaware public – about his lawsuit, his relationship with his daughter, and co-stars. Today, we’ll talk about almost everything about Selleck – the man’s achievements, his past relationships, the works he’d made, and the flaws he has.
Selleck is a legend in both the big screen and in television, which includes hit series like Magnum P.I., Friends, The Rockford Files, The Closer, and Blue Bloods. Through his 73 years in life, he has appeared in more than 50 films, including Three Men and a Baby, Quigley Down Under, Mr. Baseball, and Lassiter. He has also appeared in numerous commercials as well if his appearance in the big and small screens isn’t enough.
Selleck’s family relocated from their home from Detroit, and into California, which was a big leap for him at that time. His mother was a housewife, while his father works as a real estate vendor. During his youth, he learned about having a disciplined worth ethic and was able to pass it down to his daughter Hannah. When commented on the wake of his mother’s passing in 2017, Selleck shares this; “She’s always been there and always been very fair – even when she said ‘Wait till your father gets home,’ which usually was for good reason.”
Not The NBA
Although earning a basketball scholarship to the University of Southern California, Selleck also had a side gig on modeling to help pay for his other expenses. He is now pursuing a degree in Business Administration after a suggestion from his drama coach and began to study with Milton Katselas at the Beverly Hills Playhouse.
Surprisingly, he was part of the 160th Infantry regiment of the California Army National Guard from 1967 to 1973. “I am a veteran, I’m proud of it,” Selleck mentions. “I was a sergeant in the U.S. Army infantry, National Guard, Vietnam era. We’re all brothers and sisters in that sense.”
On his 70th birthday, Selleck considers it to be a defining moment for him; after his father’s passing in 2011, he genuinely felt like a grown man. “I had had a lot of leadership positions, I had been in the military,” Selleck reveals. “But you know, in my case, when my father died, I go ‘There’s nobody to go to for fatherly advice. You’re on your own, pal’.”
Only The Start
His drama coach and college fraternity brothers suggested Selleck audition on the 60’s show The Dating Game. Thanks to his appearance there, Pepsis contacted him to star in one of their commercials, which made him a sensation overnight! But it is only just the beginning of his career.
Selleck’s rising popularity caught the attention of Twentieth Century Fox, who gave him an opportunity that he then immediately picked up, and attended their training classes the very next day!
Soap Opera Kid
In a twist of foreshadowing, Selleck picked up the minor role as Jed Andrews in the soap opera The Young and the Restless. Some might say that role followed him into the real world, with all of those love triangles in the show reflecting parts of his real life.
Selleck got his first big lead role as Thomas Magnum in Magnum at 35 years old, which is a role he was waiting for after years of odd jobs in Hollywood. When he arrived in Hawaii to do the role, the shoot was delayed for six months due to a writer’s strike! He didn’t mind it, as he spent those months working as a handyman, which he didn’t mind one bit.
After eight seasons, and 163 successful episodes, Magnum P.I. went off the air as one of the biggest shows that graced its time, which showcases Magnum’s Detroit cap, Hawaiian t-shirts, red Ferraris, the mustache, and the Colt model and caliber pistol. This classic can easily be recognized by die-hard fans in a heartbeat!
They See Me Rollin’
But his height gave a dilemma for the producers because they wanted Thomas Magnum to drive a Porsche instead. Selleck’s height made it quite problematic for him to be inside the Porsche, so they settled for the Ferrari instead. Some might say that Magnum bumped up the sales of Ferrari once he was seen driving it around in the show.
Nothing But Respect
Larry Manetti, Selleck’s co-star from Magnum, published a memoir called Aloha Magnum. Some might expect that this memoir might have some dirt on one of Hollywood’s most beloved actors, but the opposite is true! Manetti said many incredible things about Selleck, especially when it comes to work ethic during shoots, his involvement with charities, and his loyalty to fellow cast and crew members!
Unsurprisingly, Tom Selleck was able to earn his own Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1986, which shows how much his time on Magnum P.I. helped pushed his career to new heights. It’s located in 6925 Hollywood Boulevard if you want to see it yourself.
People say that almost no one but Tom Selleck could play the lead role in Magnum P.I., but he wasn’t exactly the first choice. Kevin Dobson was also a well-established TV star who the producers were aiming for, but he rejected that role in the end. It was a lucky break for Selleck indeed!
Selleck wasn’t allowed to be in any other project during the shoot of Magnum, which was a tough fact for him to digest despite his skyrocketing popularity. He’d even got a chance to play the Steven Spielberg/George Lucas blockbuster Raiders of the Lost Ark as the now-iconic Indiana Jones! Now that was an unlucky break.
Swing And A Miss
Included in one of those missed opportunities is a role to star opposite Julie Andrews in the 1982 film Victor/Victoria. At first, Selleck was apprehensive to pick up the role, but it was only when he was already locked in for Magnum was when he wanted the role; sharing the same fate with the Indiana Jones role.
Selleck once voiced some concerns about Thomas Magnum’s initial character concept. Without hesitation, he suggested that Thomas would be an average yet approachable guy instead of what accounts to a James Bond-esque copy, which the creative team heeded luckily. Who knows what might happen to the story and its success without Selleck’s request?
Tom first married former model Jacqueline Ray after dating for a year but had to split after 11 years. He had an adopted son, Kevin, who remarkably is still in touch with even after the divorce, a remarkable thing that not many men could maintain. Then again, not many men are like Tom Selleck.
A Superstar of It’s Own
Do you know about his signature mustache? Of course, that’s rhetorical! His mustache deserves its own museum with how globally recognizable it is! You won’t even recognize Selleck when he shaves it off since it fits too well for his character. But he does share a surprising and confusing similarity with one other celebrity…
Agree to Disagree
Yes, sometimes Tom Selleck might be mistaken for other actors due to his mustache! In fact, he gets confused with one other actor almost all the time! “There was a time I could have been mistaken for Burt Reynolds. I had a mustache and so did he. But he was the number one star in the world, so there wasn’t really much confusion.” That could’ve fooled a lot of people.
A year before Magnum signed off, Selleck, along with Steve Guttenberg and Ted Danson, in the hit comedy movie Three Men and a Baby. His role in Magnum already set Selleck’s career in an amazing path, but it was Three Men and a Baby who helped propel it even further, which was the biggest motion picture box office of that year, grossing more than $170 million in the US alone!
Second time’s the charm for Selleck as he and Jillie Mack got married to each other, a year before Magnum P.I.’s final season, and they have been inseparable ever since. They both live in California with a daughter named Hannah.
He was even able to get his wife and parents to also appear in Magnum P.I, and despite their small roles, it seems quite awesome that Selleck was able to get them in the show in the first place! You can find Jillie in the fourth season, in the Rembrandt’s Girl episode.
Selleck is quite unusual as a celebrity, as he has mostly associated himself with the Republican Party and has endorsed John McCain before. He’s also a known member of the National Rifle Association as well as its board of Directors. At least we know where he stands in the political spectrum compared to other celebrities!
Neither Here Nor There
Even with his previous heavy involvement in politics, it was during the 2016 presidential race where Selleck didn’t support either Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump, up to this day. Instead, he sent a letter to former Dallas Police Department Chief David Brown, expressing his appreciation for the latter’s grace and leadership shown during the 2016 Dallas police shooting. What a top guy!
Selleck’s historied career includes more than 50 film and TV roles, yet after all this work, his net worth totaled up to $25 million! At first, $25 million is quite a lot, but compared to what other stars get paid for right now, it’s not exactly a lot.
Here’s an interesting tidbit: Selleck was offered the role of Mitch Buchannon in the 90’s TV show Baywatch, only to turn it down, with the role falling to David Hasselhoff’s hands. Apparently, Selleck turned it down because he didn’t want to be recognized as a sex symbol! Understandable.
Dr. Richard Burke
Another interesting fact about Selleck’s career is his role as Dr. Richard Burke in Friends, who is a divorced ophthalmologist who dates Monica Geller, played by Courtney Cox. He also got nominated for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actor in a comedy series! He’s quite a star!
His recent role is as police commissioner Frank Reagan in the TV series Blue Bloods. What’s also interesting is that real-life police officers salute him! It is because they are meant to salute police commissioners too! Now that’s some respect!
Co-star Donnie Whalberg publicly shared some tidbits about Selleck’s humor. “He can [be funny], yes, usually after he makes sure everyone understands what’s important. It would feel like Christmas on a Tuesday night in August when my dad started telling jokes and it’s the same thing with Tom when he starts with his oddball jokes and his weird rhymes that he tells from 1930 that is so funny. Everybody feels so much lighter and happier.” Now isn’t that lovely?
An Affair To Remember
Before his first marriage with Jillian, Selleck is known to be a heartbreaker. Former model Marie Helvin was attracted to him that she’d even shared their steamy moments in her own autobiography! “When I visited Hawaii once, Tom Selleck was shooting for Magnum P.I.,” she wrote. “We met, and a bit of an affair started, then Selleck came to London, we had dinner and went back to his hotel. But the next morning, I sent him a letter to break off this relationship because I was worried about my married life. Later on, after a week, he joined Musical Cats backstage and met his wife-to-be.”
Tom and Mimi
Selleck also had a hot pairing with Mimi Rogers in 1990, before the latter married the legendary Tom Cruise. Selleck had dated Mimi after his affair with Helvin, so one can imagine how the media would portray their relationship. It was an interesting year for both of them!
Grilled By Rosie
Selleck once appeared on Rosie O’Donnell’s show, with the former promoting his 1999 film The Love Letter. However, O’Donnell kept on interviewing Selleck about gun ownership, to which he boldly replied, “It’s your show, and you can talk about it after I leave.”
Tom Selleck also starred alongside Katherine Heigl and Ashton Kutcher in the film Killers in 2010. During the casting, Kutcher wanted an intimidating actor to play the role of Mr. Kornfeldt. “I call Mr. Kornfeldt ‘sir’ in the script a lot,” he explains. “And I was thinking, ‘who am I going to call, sir?’ Who’s a bigger guy, who’s got an intimidating thing, but doesn’t have to try to be intimidating?” And Selleck seems to fit into that role like a glove.
Sometimes, Selleck would be so stuck in his work in Magnum, that he hardly gets some time for his wife and daughter. The work-life sometimes makes him wish that he could take a break, and return to his more crucial personal life. His dedication to his family while balancing with one of the biggest roles of his life speaks volumes.
“I’ve found it very difficult to expose my private life and live with it,” Selleck explained in an interview. “It’s important to nurture your marriage. I think wanting time away from work has been good for that.” That’s one of the marks of a great man and husband.
Selleck also had an interview with Closer Weekly, describing why he had to eventually leave Magnum P.I. “Magnum P.I. went to 163 shows and we still had ground to cover, and I wasn’t tired of it,” he said. “I was tired of it because I was in every shot.” His current role in Blue Bloods is ideal for him since he doesn’t have to be in every shot, therefore not having to work every day.
Not The Only Reason
That was just only one of reasons to drop the series, though. “I quit Magnum to have a family.” Selleck continues. “It took a long time to get off the train, but I try very hard to have balance.” He made such a big sacrifice to be with his family, and has not looked back ever since.
Words of Wisdom
As stated before, Selleck has been married twice, but it seems that wife number two is going to be a keeper. For almost 30 years now, it seems that Jillie Mack is the one for Selleck. He also opened up about what he believes is the key to a successful marriage: “It’s important to nurture your marriage… I think wanting time away from work has been good for that.”
Tom Selleck and Jill Mack surprised many when they married in 1987, in a secret wedding! Selleck’s brother was responsible for organizing this incognito event in a 24-hour wedding chapel located in Lake Tahoe, Nevada. They have first came to the chapel as “Tom Jenkins” and “Suzie Mark”, before revealing their true names to their pastor minutes before the ceremony took place!
“They were both nervous, like any other couple about to get married,” said the wedding officiant Rev. David Immel. “He was very concerned that the service be heartfelt, very concerned for her that the service be meaningful. He is a very warm, caring man.” Isn’t that just beautiful?
My Daughter, Hannah
Selleck is like any other father when it comes to his daughter Hannah – filled to the brim with pride, joy, and love. While raising her, her parents purposely kept her out of the spotlight, as they felt it was the best for her, considering where they’re coming from. In the meantime, Hannah is also an equestrian, too!
Hannah’s life is quite different from other celebrities as she was mostly raised up in the family farm; learning how to work diligently, and care for the horses there as well. “As a kid, they tried to raise me as normally as possible given my dad’s line of work,” Hannah explains. “Those horses have been a great way for me to have my own accomplishments outside of whatever my parents had done.”
“We both thought it was the best environment for [Hannah] to grow up,” Mack said, on raising Hannah up on the 60-acre ranch, and judging how she’d grew up, it seems to be the right call for the parents!
Hannah’s love for horses is one of the main reasons why she’s an equestrian, and is one of her passions that helped her become who she is. “I have a small breeding program in California where I’m developing young horses to bring along and sell,” Hannah says. “It’s a business that so far has been really great and a great experience. It is a very expensive sport, so that is why my dad encouraged and invested in this breeding operation. They have been very supportive. The prices of horses have become astronomical. So that’s why it’s so much more rewarding to bring a horse along on your own.”
A 60-acre avocado farm in California is where the Selleck family reside and manage, making sure that the place would run as smoothly as possible. But a few years ago, California was hit by a severe drought, and Tom had to hire a truck to transfer around $1.4 million of water from the nearby town’s hydrant just to keep his avocado farm going. But it didn’t take long until that action caught up to him…
On The Other Side
Selleck was sued in 2015 by the Calleguas Municipal Water District, back by allegations about the illegally brought water to the avocado farm. Investigations show that Selleck’s farm used a tanker truck from a neighboring district, just after it was filled up from a fire hydrant. He has apparently done it around 12 times in the past two years, in which he was also sued when a cease order was ignored.
A private investigator was paid around $22,000 to file the misconduct the farm did, but a settlement was made, which had Selleck pay $21,000 to cover the investigative costs incurred.
Kevin, who was Selleck’s stepson from his first marriage, is still close to the Hollywood legend up to this day. They share a strong bond with each other ever since Kevin’s teenage years. Sadly, he is now currently saddled with problems that carried into his adulthood, such as a failed music career and financial woes. It has hardened Kevin’s personality and also taken a toll on his relationship with Selleck.
Selleck promised himself that when he married Jillie, he would be more self-conscious around other women. And Jillie was quite nervous when one of their neighbors happened to be the Italian bombshell actress Sophia Loren. “If I was on my way to Home Depot and she was out on the driveway in her bathrobe and she said exactly these words: ‘Thomaso, would you like a cappuccino?’ I could go in,” Selleck said, but we’re quite sure that he’d left his playboy days behind.
Selleck also has a strong ethical code with his fair share of scandals. “I try very hard to conduct myself in an ethical way because that is important to my stability now,” he explained. “We are a culture that is so individual-centered. A Culture that says that nothing is basically more important than the way you feel.
Selleck appeared as a late-night guest star at the Chevy Chase Show on Fox in 1993. On a skit, he was awarded a 1992 Worst Supporting Razzie Actor Award for his role in Christopher Columbus as King Ferdinand of Spain: the Discovery. Selleck just gave the Razzie on-air and made the whole situation clear and asked the studio audience to “blur me a raspberry.”
Heart of Gold
When Magnum, P.I., was airing in the 8th and final season, the Universal Studios awarded a $350,000 bonus to Tom Selleck for extravagant gifts, such as Rolex watches and Porsche. However, the most important thing is that he gave $1000 bonuses to the entire cast and crew of Magnum, P.I. Told you that he has a core of gold.
In a 1980 interview, someone asked Selleck about refusing a cameo role in the Magnum P.I adaptation, to which he replied bluntly. “I tell you how much I ‘m concerned because I like ‘Magnum’ and we have loyal fans. They’re taking these television shows, and buying them and spending $100 million in special effects, then mocking them and trivializing them. Then they try to get a performer who was used to do some ridiculous movie to prove that it’s all right to the crowd. And I won’t do it.”
Tom Selleck is more than an actor, he is also a volleyball player indoors and at the beach! He is actually playing for the Outrigger Canoe Club in Honolulu as the outside hitter position. One teammate once said, “Tom was great teammate, thankful that he joined a talented and experienced group and practiced and played hard as his Magnum schedule allowed… He had been very patient with all of us, and we enjoyed a large crowd replacing the usual sparse number of players’ friends and wives at the national tourney matches.”.
Say It Ain’t So
Then the unthinkable happened in 1997… Tom Selleck shaved off his mustache! NOOOOOOOOO! All right, I’m calm again. He nevertheless did this for the film In & Out. He didn’t shave it again afterward unless it was necessary for a role.
In 2001 Selleck took the lead in the A Thousand Clowns Broadway revival. Critics quickly sneaking up Selleck ‘s work as Jason Robards, Jr., felt the part was much better, I mean he won tons of awards to portray that character. The playwright Gardner quickly said, “Selleck always thought of Murray as he was.”
Not surprisingly, Selleck is the avid outdoorsman, cartoonist, and gun collector, all of which made him eager to star in Western movies! And he made a star in Westerns. He appeared in movies including The Sacketts, The Shadows, Quigley Under, and Crossfire Trail.
It’s not yet known that Tom Selleck was genuinely invited into the International Mustache Hall of Fame again in 2015. Yes, we ‘re serious. Dead serious. Selleck has naturally been added to the movie and television category.
I’ll Be Back
Can you believe that Selleck missed Indiana Jones ‘ classic role as well as the title role in the 1984 hit film, The Terminator?! Wild. Yes, he missed both because of his Magnum, P.I .. Yikes.
It is no wonder that Selleck is an enormous philanthropist. Great. Great. He is currently a member of the Board of The Joseph & Edna Josephson Ethics Institute, a member of the Board of the Character Coalition County, a national fatherhood initiative spokesperson, a member of the John F. Kennedy Center for Performing Arts committee, and is even active in the New York City Program of Student & Sponsored Partnership. However, this list might be so much longer, he loves to give it back!
Female Sequel Series
Eva Longoria is the executive producer who has created the all-female spin-off from Magnum P.I.! Lily, Magnum ‘s daughter, would follow this show as she takes over the business of her father in Hawaii. We can’t wait to hear more!
Selleck has recently sold the iconic Ferrari 308 he drove during his Magnum PI days at the Arizona auction. The price you are asking for? A cool $250 thousand. Moreover, it even got an authentication certificate to demonstrate that Selleck really used it to drive. It sold only 181,500 dollars.
Dr. Richard Burke is a pretty impressive off-screen guy. Why? Because he’s the 3rd biggest Friends guest character. We ‘re not surprised by this. The first two are Brad Pitt and Paul Rudd, not surprising too.
He has been playing the role of Jesse Stone, a transplanted lawyer since 2005. This role comes from a series inspired by a TV-made film based on the novels of Robert B. Parker. There are currently nine films and Selleck himself recently started producing episodes. Film 5, Jesse Stone: Thin Ice, was actually not a new adaptation, but an original story, created by Selleck!
Selleck was asked to become a star in many advertisements during his long career. If you are as liked as he is, sales are likely to boom. He has been featured on the screen for the Right Guard, AT&T, Florida Natural Orange Juice, and the AAG.
Tom Selleck did something pretty amazing on August 11, 1997! But what was it? Well, ladies and gentlemen, he became The View’s first-ever famous guest. That’s a first for him and for the show.
Now that you see how Selleck was born in January, this makes him an Aquarius; and when someone is an Aquarius, they have some interesting attributes, like trueness, curiosity, affectionate, frankness, and imagination.
While Tom Selleck starred on Magnum, P.I. He would also win an Emmy and Golden Globes Award for Best Actor in a Drama Series. That’s not all! He was able to earn four People’s Choice Awards, four Emmy nominations, and also six Golden Globes nominations. That’s how talented he was!
In 2007, Selleck joined the cast of the Las Vegas TV drama as A.J. Cooperation. Cooper is the new Montecito Casino owner. In addition, it was the first regular role for Selleck in a drama series since his days on the Magnum P.I.!
Tom Selleck was awarded an honorary doctorate degree from Pepperdine University back in year 2000. He’s known for having an outstanding character and ethics. How kind of him. That shows how humble and thoughtful he is.
Tom Selleck has been an ardent, loyal, and proud supporter of the Detroit Tigers since his childhood. There was even a time when he owned the team as a minority! Now that’s the game ‘s love.
Selleck has also been working with a narrative. He just doesn’t stick to television and movies, folks! Especially for the North America series, which is a documentary of natural history. His voice adds a touch of life to the series and helps to improve the flow of the narrative. But it’s a given one.
If you ever are in Washington, D.C. at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History, you have to stop. You must check out their iconic Hawaiian shirt display. That’s right! The same shirt was donated to the museum during the filming.
In February 2009, Tom Selleck became the national spokesperson of the new Education Center which was established on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund that was built on the National Mall. What an honor to be part of it!
I Like It
In 2002, Selleck was asked to talk in an interview about his career. He showed that he loves the visible practice of Catholics with his character on Blue Bloods and the whole Reagan family, although he himself is not very religious.
After the divorce of Tom Selleck, he was understandably lonely. At the time he was in London shooting and his teammates took him to see ‘ Cats ‘ music he said that he wanted to watch it. Yet, after the first series, he was back for a dozen times!
Well, he kept returning because he was charmed with Rumpleteazer. Oh, and it was Jillie Joan Mack, 25, who portrayed Rumpleteazer! Selleck introduced herself and they eventually made dinner plans. With Mack’s’ Cats ‘ contract coming to an end, she had plenty of time to see Selleck and that’s exactly what they did.
Inevitably, Mack has nothing to do with London so she decided to go to Hawaii! This couple walked together the red carpet and always looked unbelievably in love. Mack also came when Selleck got his star at the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
This couple has been husband and wife for more than 30 years. Selleck interviewed NY Daily News and said, “Jillie and I are pretty well partnered. We do nothing or make decisions without consulting one another,” he continued, “and if one of us decides that Hannah is involved, the other parent fully supports that, even if you disagree with it.”
Lots Of Love
For a while, Tom Selleck lay low, but for no negative reason. But because he only wants to concentrate on his family. He had a fairly Playboy image, but in the past, it’s all. Jillie and Hannah are all about which he cares.
