Born And Raised As Prince Of Greece And Denmark
Prince Philip Duke of Edinburgh was originally born Philip, prince of Greece and Denmark. He was in actual fact born in 1921, in Corfu, Greece. His mother was Princess Alice and his father Prince Andrew. His birthday is actually not his actual birthday since Greece was still using the Julian calendar at that time. His Family Was Exiled When He Was Just A Boy
His family was required to leave Greece after the Greco-Turkish war as his uncle, Constantine I was abdicated. The family was connected to the Mountbatten dynasty which led to a British boat called the HMS Calypso coming to evacuate them. Prince Philip was supposedly taken in a fruit crate and he was just 18 months old. The family ventured to France and Philip was raised in Saint-Cloud with his aunt, Marie Bonaparte.
Princess Alice His Mother Was Connected To Freud
In 1930 Princess Alice was diagnosed with paranoid Schizophrenia, she needed help and treatment and was put in a mental institution due to this. Sigmund Freud was a family friend and was connected to treating her at some stage, she was treated in Berlin and then Switzerland. Princess Alice actually helped Greek Jews by hiding them during World War II, she gave them shelter.
Tragedy Amongst His Family
Prince Philip’s sister Cecilie was in a tragic accident in 1937. She, her husband, and their children were involved in a plane crash. Unfortunately, the family died along with most of their children. Cecilie was also pregnant at the time. The family has had quite a bit of tragedy amongst them as Philips’s uncle George Mountbatten passed away at the young age of 45 from cancer. He was in fact his guardian too.
Young Love With The Queen
Philip and Elizabeth met at a wedding in 1934 but their first proper meeting was after his studies. Philip had attended Dartmouth and then became a naval cadet. Queen Elizabeth and her family paid a royal visit to Dartmouth in 1939, she asked if Philip would cater to her two daughters- Elizabeth and Margaret. Prince Philip And Queen Elizabeth Are Relatives
A bit strange we know, but most royals back in the day were in fact related. Prince Philip and Queen Elizabeth II are both great-great-grandchildren of Queen Victoria. Princess Alice and King Edward VII were children of Queen Victoria. However, that’s not all Christian IX of Denmark is Philip’s great-grandfather and was also the grandfather of George V, who is the Queen’s grandfather. Complicated is an understatement.
Giving Up His Family Name For The Queen
Prince Philip had to give up his name and all connection to the Danish and Greek throne, making him a naturalized British citizen. Denmark at a later stage removed the family from its order of succession in its entirety. He officially became Philip Mountbatten whereas before he had used no surname. He also agreed to not invite his three sisters to his wedding, as they were married to Germann Prince’s and the war was still a fresh event.
The Fourth Duke In Edinburgh History
The Duke of Edinburgh title was only brought about in 1726, with the first Duke being Prince Frederick. Frederick passed it onto his son but the title was then not used for approximately over 100 years. Queen Victoria restored it and gave the title to her son, Prince Alfred in 1866. Alfred did not produce any succeeding heirs and the title was then only resurrected when given to Prince Philip in 1947.
Prince Philip is not only the Duke of Edinburgh but he also received more titles on his wedding day. He received the Earl of Merioneth and Baron Greenwich- George VI his father-in-law titled him with these. Prince Philip also sacrificed smoking on his wedding day, he knew Elizabeth somewhat despised her father for smoking cigarettes. The pair were just smitten with one another.
Longest Of All Male Royals To Live
Prince Philip is coming up on his 100th birthday, the only one to outlive him thus far has been The Queen Mother who lived until 101. Princess Alice who was one of the aunts of Queen Elizabeth II and the Duchess of Gloucester died two months before her 103rd birthday. Prince Philip and Queen Elizabeth II have been married for 73 years which is also the longest marriage in royal history.
