They claim that we are the sum of the choices we make. Though things work out for some of us, others do not get quite as lucky. The bad and good both define, at any rate, the person we end up becoming. Talk is cheap, so make your actions count! If you don’t know who you are yet and what you want to be, don’t worry, because you’re sure to find out soon enough. The smallest decisions may seem inconsequential at the time, but they can have vital and long-lasting impacts on our lives. We might be able to convince you of this when you read about this young couple who ended up accidentally buying a Scottish manor.

Young Couple Bought An Old Manor By Accident, Decides To Fix It Up On Their Own

Making Mistakes

Claire Segeren and Cal Hunter are young people who are in love with each other. When Claire decided to give up med school for one year, they had a whole year together. At an auction, the two decided to buy a house, but they conducted some research first and paid a visit to the sites. The two eventually reached a decision. Cal then went on to place a bid on the property they wanted. He ended up winning that auction and got a 120-year-old manor instead!

Wrong Bid

Even though neither of the two was Scottish, they were looking to buy an apartment in Pollokshields, Glasgow. The property had been damaged by fire, so they already knew it would require a lot of work. They thought it was going to take them six months to fix it, but it was worth it. Claire went home for a visit as Cal dropped by the auction house.

Big Accident

After offering £ 30,000 for it, he put the offer on the estate and was pleased that he won. However, when he realized that in not one lot, but three, the house he placed the bid on was sold, his joy then turned to panic! He’s got another property, it turns out. It was a 120-year-old mansion in Dunoon, Scotland.

Taking It Well

After having heard “all sales are final.” Cal knew he was messing up. He took a deep breath, then called his girlfriend, who was in Canada visiting her family. Can you just imagine letting your girlfriend know that you were paying $39,400 for a house you didn’t want? She didn’t get too angry about it, surprisingly.

It Could Be Worse

They decided to renovate the house they bought, given that the amount of money for a property was not too large. She told him this wasn’t going to be a problem. Her father was right next to her when Cal called, and he agreed with her. He told them, “What’s the worst that could happen?” Just like that, they were just about to find out what their new place had in store for them.

Fixer Upper

At the auction, Cal learned that the manor was called Jameswood Villa. It was described as requiring “full upgrading throughout.” Going all the way back to 2010, he had seen a Google Streetview image. These two, although the place was no longer in its peak form, were ready for a challenge.

Ideal, But Not Ideal

They had to look it up Dunoon on the map, so Claire was Canadian, and Cal was English, to find out where their new property was located. They seemed to be happy to find out that it wasn’t that far from Glasgow. Claire was planning to attend med school at Glasgow University, so this was ideal for them. The shock had worn off already, and the young couple felt very hopeful about the actual situation.

Both of them were cautiously optimistic regarding their new effort. Cal went over to Dunoon to check out the property that they got from the auction. They were met with disappointment as soon as they got to the area as they learned that the photo was extremely outdated.

Rotten To The Core

After that, the roof arrived, with gaping holes. It was quick to see that nobody had lived in the manor for the past 20 years, as most of the timber had decayed.   Aside from that, they knew that it would also be necessary to replace plumbing and electrics. It was not anticipated that their new “derelict house” would be this dangerous and run down.

Bad Shape

Not just that, but the “leaning, crumbling front wall” was angled to hide it in such a way that it showed that there were significant structural troubles. Later, they concluded the house was sinking into the ground. There was really no doubt that this location would be a challenging issue.

Optimistic and Determined

Even after all these difficulties, Cal and Claire were not about to give up. They have traveled all over England and have seen abandoned buildings everywhere. They were ready to turn it into a beautiful home. Although Jameswood looked like flipping was going to be harder than they wanted, they were not deterred by the challenge. They felt thrilled with it! Quite the adventurous pair these two of them are!

A Wake-Up Call

However, they had a wake-up call when they realized they did not have the cash to carry out the project. They knew they would have to get crafty to afford this venture. They would not only have to do the renovations on their own, but they would also have to alter their lifestyle. They would also have to stop paying rent or mortgage, in addition to doing all of the work.

The Caravan Life

If they wished to do something like this, they had to sacrifice lots of stuff and go all-in. And so they did. The two of them rolled up their sleeves and started to work. They planned to become homeless for the project’s duration, so they rented a caravan and then parked it in the garden of the property.

Manageable Issues

The caravan would’ve been their home as long as the issue has not yet ended, although it does not have running water or electricity, as the problem still persists. They managed, however, to get by with candles and ask their neighbors if their oven and shower could be used.

Adventurous Couple

These two young individuals characterized themselves as a couple “determined to make life an adventure.” It sure does look as though they have precisely everything they want! They were more than willing to take a chance on the hand with which they were dealing. After all, fate was the one to bring them together as well.

How They Met

We’re certain that you would like to know how, for the very first time, this Englishman and this Canadian encountered. Evidently, their first meeting occurred in the French Alps. They met and got along really well during the ski season. Then, on a road trip, they became an item, crossed Europe and spent a summer in Canada. As the saying goes, the remainder is history!

The couple decided to set up a blog and also an Instagram page to document the development they were creating on the redevelopment. It was a really complicated redevelopment, and documenting their journey made it more fun for the pair.

What Have We Done?

The two of them made the decision to use the humorous title, “What Have We Dunoon?”  “as a joke, “what have we done?” This is a clever spin on how the project began and the city where their property was located. Right, a hilarious wordplay?

Oh and, of course, tea breaks! They are in the UK, after all. The couple recently posted this picture on their Instagram, thanking followers as they recently reached the 100th mark!

The two had no choice but to bring themselves all into the work, as we have said previously. They asked a few of their friends for help. They got help cleaning up the dirt on the pavement, for instance.

Making It Work

There had to be a lot of things done, so they kept taking this task for granted. That their friend was willing to help out was a nice thing. Claire has been working on the project full-time, while Cal also takes on woodworking jobs as often as he can to help them make ends meet.

Setbacks Left and Right

There was no denying that the challenge they are taking on is a huge one with how much work needed to be done. The two of them have faced different issues since they started the project in November 2018. Cal went on to explain, “Finding a new problem seems to be a daily occurrence.”

DIY Installations

When the work van kept getting stuck in the mud, the two of them took it upon themselves to install a driveway. They also had to dig it up, which was more elusive than they thought, in order to find the water supply. Searching for a cable that would allow them to power the grid even took five months!

Like A Paradox

The two had one more issue that would interest writer Joseph Heller. A new roof was required for the manor, as it currently has enough holes to pass for a Swiss cheese slice. Unbeknownst to them, however, there was a problem.

The Community

It was a great idea that they were never really alone in the project. Their friends not only dropped by to assist them. The local community in town also has Cal and Claire’s support! We spoke about neighbors who thought the young couple would share their showers and ovens with them. Other ways they would help out, though, were there.

Stuck In A Rut

The walls did not seem strong enough just to support a new roof because they were far too rickety. The walls had to be fixed, but because there was no roof, only rain would come down and ruin them again. “It’s like a huge catch-22 jigsaw puzzle,” Cal described the situation.

“We’ve been overwhelmed by the kindness of the people of Dunoon,” said Cal. The homeowners were always encouraging and supportive, although some thought that they were insane to do so. What a marvellous community they are surrounded by! In order to get extra help for their venture, where family, friends, and even random people can make donations, Claire and Cal set up a GoFundMe page.

Support From Near And Far

Several other individuals have reached out to Claire and Cal via their blog. Their followers, from technical advice to places to buy materials, were always there for these two. If that’s not wonderful enough, many people who lent a hand during their renovation were also met by the outgoing couple. On a daily basis, 4-5 friends show up to help where they can.

Eco-Friendly Project

Cal and Claire wanted to make this major renovation as environment conscious as they could potentially be, in addition to their practical funding concerns. In that sense, they have opted to use reclaimed building materials. Timber, floorboards, kitchen units are ready to be recycled, you name it! Whatever they can get their hands on, they’ll use it!

A Test

Jameswood’s house is going to be more than just a place for Claire and Cal to learn life skills. Claire believed that it was an opportunity to test the relationship as well. It is unclear what they could not survive if they managed to survive in the caravan pitched on the building site. That was her justification. She was optimistic in everything and saw the good side of things. “It’s a long way off,” Claire admitted, “but it is there.”

Their End Goal

When starting a project of this scope, everything must be planned down to the small details. By finalizing what you will be working on, you plan to ensure that there will be no work wasted. Fortunately, this scenario was prevented by the young couple.

Big Future Plans

For the both of them, after they set aside their shovels, they wished to develop the estate. They would like to remodel the landmark into three private apartments. They plan to sell two of them, and use the proceeds to pay off their loans. In the meantime, they will live in their spare unit.

A Happy Accident

Equilibrium is crucial as you can see here. When they understood their purchase of the wrong home was not refundable, they would have been easily discouraged. It was a mistake to make, and you wouldn’t say it again. Furthermore, Cal and Claire saw this incident as a “happy accident” and a blessing in disguise. Time cannot be rewound, so it would be silly to waste it.

No Need To Dwell

They believed life to be an adventure no matter what they set their sights on. They did that, and we’re glad to hear it. When they were at the lowest point in their careers, they were not willing to despair. We’re sure there’s a lot out there that we can’t do, and we’re sure many people feel the same way. With a smile on her face, and a determined attitude, Cal rushes head first into everything she does.

Calculating Risks

People need to consider the risks and rewards of what they do in their everyday life. The potential consequences in the venture were obvious at all stages. It is also possible that after they paid, they lost the cash. Also, with the upcoming renovations, they will lose even more. At best, it was a big gamble.

Mortgage-Less

However, they thought that the positive aspects outweigh the disadvantages in this case. Not only will they learn so many, but they will also become closer and bond as a couple. Also, they are now able to call themselves house owners when they’re in their twenties. The law doesn’t require anyone to have a mortgage. It would be a great achievement.

No Gray Areas

When we say that America’s greatest president was Theodore Roosevelt, most everyone will agree with our evaluation. If you don’t satisfy us, we are ready to fight for what we are owed. He talked about his plan for conquering future challenges. As a young boy, he suffered from asthma and then became a war hero. If that doesn’t get the point across, then what it actually does, we have no idea!

Wise Words

He’d just know what to say to Cal and to Claire. He said that it is better to dare to do mighty things, even if you sometimes fail than to live in power. “Gray twilight that knows neither victory nor defeat.” Whoa. These two go-getters will live as the great advice of the former President. They have never given up, even when facing bumps in the road, during the course of their development.

Good Luck

We’re not sure if there is a direct line to fate, but we’re sure that if there were real justice, they would reap a large financial benefit. It was Fate that joined these two lovers from different parts of the world. The couple, now in a third country, is in a new chapter of their life together, which has taken a very different turn than they had imagined.

Nothing Is In Their Way

While this is still in its developmental stage, which will take several years to perfect, we’re just going to keep our fingers crossed for it. We hope they never lose their positivity, but we are not too concerned about the two. We wish the pair the best of luck. They know what they want and pursue their goals without any hesitation.

Remaining Positive

We do not find it hard to believe that they had several disheartening experiences over the course of time. It is probably very tiring. We hope they remain hopeful, all the same. Despite these setbacks, they remain positive and are not letting any setbacks keep them down.

With an abundance of obstacles, it could be a long road ahead. The truck bottomed out so that bricks fell out of the truck, but also for one other thing. We are positive that they will be able to succeed. Their arrangements will unfold gradually, but surely.

Good Riddance

The house is old, and so is in need of repair. They needed to eliminate the most of the junk. In order to get rid of various dirty, unsanitary, moldy, and gross items, they went to the trash lots many times. While they were driving to the dump, they filled up the truck once it had a full load. Despite their best efforts, most of the items found in the home have already been disposed of.

Stay Safe

It is really important to keep in mind that when you would be working on a project of this magnitude (or any project in general), your security should still be the highest priority. There are many things that could pose an unreasonable level of risk, and could be harmful such as remodeling.

Stay Safe

Caution

This is why you have to make absolutely sure that you wear clothing appropriate for work, and gear that’s best for your environment. Working at a construction site exposes you to various air particles, including dust, mold, and chemicals. You have to wear your respirator because of this.

Down and Dirty

Lastly, it is also crucial for the couple to be conscious that if they really want to guarantee that the renovation project will be an achievement, they will have to get down to the nitty gritty. For their hands to be protected from dirt and cuts and things, it’s good that they have the means to buy work gloves.

In fact, they are so enthusiastic about their new pair of gloves, that they post it on Instagram and make a witty statement about how perfect they are. It was the couple’s hope that the new pair of gloves would last beyond an hour, but sadly, this was not the case.

Breaks They Deserve

Though the couple had a tremendous journey ahead of them, they were determined in seeing it actually happen and not give up on their dreams of converting the decaying old manor into their dream home. It is a positive indication that they haven’t lost their hope in spite of what they have been going through.
