The entire world was shocked to hear that Harry and Meghan Markle, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, were renouncing their “senior” royal duties. The Palace was just as shocked as the Queen did not even receive advanced notice. However, many were already speculating that the couple was getting more and more dissatisfied with having their lives scrutinized. We are here to break down the issues that made them decide to do something so drastic. Did you know that there were already signs that they did not like the media attention since the fall of 2017? It only took a year and a half for them after that to decide that they had already had enough. This visual timeline will definitely help you understand it all!
It is not a secret that Meghan did not have an easy time transitioning into her royal duties. From the very beginning, she got subjected to a lot of scrutiny. In November 2016, the Prince’s communications secretary published a public statement that the local press was harassing the actress. Things have definitely changed for them three years after their blind date. They now want to become a financially independent pair, but what do they plan to do? There are many questions that need to be answered! Let us not get ahead of ourselves, however, and kick this article off at the beginning.
September 2017 – Admitting Challenges
When Meghan appeared on the cover of Vanity Fair, she admitted that she did not have it easy. “It has its challenges, and it comes in waves,” she said, “some days it can feel more challenging than others.” Two months after that, the couple let the world know that they were engaged, which must have made things even harder. The actress said, “And right out of the gate it was surprising the way things changed. But I still have this support system all around me, and, of course, my boyfriend’s support.” At the time, she was staying positive but acknowledged that her position was difficult.
November 2017 – Revealing Intense Scrutiny
Meghan Markle was 36 years old when she got engaged to Prince Harry, three years her junior. She said that she was “naïve” during the early days of the relationship, particularly when it came to what it was like to go out with a royal family member. As you can see, she was starting to get a better idea of what it would be like to become a royal. Harry said he tried to warn her, “as much as possible,” about how hard it would be. In the end, they were still “totally surprised” by the amount of attention they got. When Meghan spoke to the BBC, Meghan said, “We were hit so hard at the beginning with a lot of mistruths.”
December 2017 – Awkward Christmas
Her first Christmas with the Royal family did not go as smoothly as she hoped for. Princess Michael of Kent donned an insensitive brooch on her jacket during the Christmas lunch. The “blackamoor” jewelry came with a depiction of an African man. Christmas lunches are not exactly easy affairs, but we are sure that it was worse to see a royal with racist jewelry in Meghan’s company. The palace went on to release a statement that said the Princess felt “very sorry and distressed” about it, defending that it was “a gift” that had already “been worn many times before.” Yikes!
May 2018 – Breaking Wedding Traditions
In 2018, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle got married at Windsor Castle and received the titles Duke and Duchess of Sussex. The entire world watched as the lovely actress walked down the aisle without her father. He did not attend the wedding at all, as a matter of fact. Prince Charles was there to meet her at the end of the aisle, which made the entire world curious about this deviation from tradition. They also broke the norm by having the sermon and vows be presided over by a black Episcopal Church bishop. This was the first time it happened at a royal wedding, and other royals present were reported to have “bemused” looks on their faces when the ceremony was going on.
October 2018 – Her Pregnancy
In late 2018, the couple announced that they were expecting a child together! It happened not that long after the wedding. Meghan was still at the beginning of the pregnancy, so it did not show when they started their commonwealth tour later that month. Press photos showed Meghan cradling a tiny baby bump several times. The press did not respond positively to these gestures as they accused her of “flaunting” or “virtue signaling.” They said it was self-righteous or a way to demonstrate moral correctness. Sadly, this made the public think that she is untrustworthy and inauthentic. Yikes.
February 2019 – Baby Shower Criticisms
Meghan decided to host her baby shower not in Britain but in New York. Her good friend Serena Williams funded the occasion, and all the guests had to endure a lot of camera flashes courtesy of the paparazzi. This special occasion for the new royal got condemned across the pond, however. You see, baby showers are not common in the United Kingdom. Many British people thought that she was being over-the-top and even dubbed the event “Showergate.” Quite a number of people on the fence about Meghan felt like it confirmed that she was far too American to be a member of the royal family.
March 2019 – Rumors About Harry And William
When Meghan was still carrying the baby, the couple ended their residency at Kensington Palace. They decided to move to Frogmore Cottage in Windsor. The cottage renovations were estimated to have cost more than $3 million of taxpayer’s money, which did not do the public’s reception of them any favors. At the time, rumors were beginning to emerge about a feud between Harry and William. All the negative publicity took a toll on Harry and Meghan, which must be the reason they hired an American PR agent by the name of Sara Latham. With clients like Hilary Clinton, she is definitely qualified for the job.
April 2019 – Breaking Social Media Tradition
It is not new for a royal family member to open an Instagram account, but Harry and Meghan had a different approach to using it. They decided to take full rein of what would get posted under their Instagram handle, @sussexroyal, and even write the captions by themselves. They choose images the public has never seen before, and they are allegedly handpicked by Duke and Duchess. Unlike other royals, they decided to become more vulnerable to scrutiny and criticism by foregoing a mediator.
Early May 2019 – Nontraditional Birth Announcement
Archie, their first kid, was born in May 2019. Everyone raised an eyebrow after they let everyone know that he would not get a title. Instead, they asked for their son to be called “Master” and personally revealed his gender through Instagram. As you can see, they decided to do things their own way. The public did not find out when Meghan went to the hospital nor about the photo call two days later. For the later, they hand-picked the members of the press who were present. In another deviation from the norm, Meghan decided to have a camera team from CBS, an American TV network, to join in on the fun.
Late May 2019 – Racist British Radio Host
Later that month, Meghan suffered more racial abuse. It was a lot more public than before, however. A British radio show host called Danny Baker took to Twitter to post a photo of a chimpanzee in reference to Archie. Because he is a mixed child, people found it insensitive and racist. The host later got fired after this controversy. He said that he did not post it with racist intentions and only wanted to compare circus animals and royals. He later said in a tweet, “Would have used same stupid pic for any other Royal birth or Boris Johnson kid or even one of my own.” He went on, “It’s a funny image. (Though not of course in that context.) Enormous mistake, for sure. Grotesque.” Still, he apologized: “Anyway, here’s to ya Archie, Sorry mate.”
Early June 2019 – Splitting From The Cambridges
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex decided to do more to distance themselves by announcing that they would part from the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge when it came to their charity duties. They decided to start a charity foundation of their own, which led William and Kate to rename the original one to the Royal Foundation of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. They said that it had to do more with the fact that William would likely take over the throne in the future, so they were more “constitutionally constrained.” Meanwhile, this was what the Palace had to say about it: “These changes are designed to best complement the work and responsibilities of Their Royal Highnesses as they prepare for their future roles, and to better align their charitable activity with their new households.”
Late June 2019 – Expensive Renovations
The couple was under fire yet again when the expected costs of the renovations came out. Some found $3 million of taxpayer’s money to be way too much. The cottage is actually five separate homes that morphed into a huge mansion instead. This happened around the same time that the Sovereign Grant, the allowance received by the monarchy from the government, was revealed to be $85 million or $25 million more than the year before that. It is not hard to see why the public was not happy about it.
July 2019 – Archie’s Baptism
Archie’s christening was yet another opportunity for Harry and Meghan to stray from traditions. The couple made it a private event as usual but decided to hide the identity of their son’s godparents. The palace released a statement that said, “The godparents, in keeping with their wishes, will remain private.” The British public did not approve of this. The Duke and Duchess received a lot of online criticism after feeling shortchanged by this lack of information. People were quick to accuse them of giving the public little in return when they are being financed by the taxpayers of the United Kingdom.
Early August 2019 – Hypocrisy Accusations
When he was speaking to Jane Goodall, a primatologist, Harry said that he and Meghan only wanted to have a “maximum” of two kids to limit their environmental impact. He said, “What we need to remind everybody is: these are things that are happening now. We are already living in it. We are the frog in the water and it’s already been brought to the boil. Which is terrifying.” It was rather poorly-timed, and the press called them out for their hypocrisy since they flew on private jets for holiday vacations.
Late August 2019 – Ibiza Over Balmoral
The papers reported that the couple would join Queen Elizabeth in Balmoral in the summer. There were also rumors that Her Highness planned to throw Meghan a birthday party over there. In the end, the couple did not show up at the historical site and headed for Europe instead. They went to Ibiza and the south of France to pay their pal Elton John a visit. Of course, the public was not impressed to learn that they used private jets to get to those places. In fact, it only brought more scrutiny about their decisions.
Early September 2019 – South Africa Tour
When they went on a tour of South Africa, the couple was involved in a documentary in which they spoke about their struggles. Meghan said that she “really tried to adopt this sensibility of the British stiff upper lip, but I think that what that does internally is probably really damaging. I never thought this would be easy, but I thought it would be fair.” Harry shared similar sentiments and said, “I will not be bullied into playing a game that killed my mum. For me and my wife, of course, there’s a lot of stuff that hurts… especially when the majority of it is untrue.” The Prince also revealed that the two of them had talked about living in Africa for some time, even if it was only part-time.
Late September 2019 – Guest-Editing Vogue
After the announcement that Meghan was going to guest-edit the British Vogue issue for September, people responded both positively and negatively. They discussed if a member of the royal family should be allowed to do this, even if she was not the first one to do such a thing. The cover came with portraits of 15 women who were handpicked as “forces for change.” The duchess commissioned the articles in the magazine too. The fact that she allegedly left the Queen out of the cover got criticized and fed fuel to rumors that there was a growing feud between Meghan and the Palace.
Early October 2019 – Attacking The Press
The Mail on Sunday published a handwritten letter that young Meghan sent her father in October. Meghan decided to respond by filing a lawsuit against the newspaper and claiming that she needed to “take action” against “relentless propaganda.” Harry launched his own verbal attack on the press with strong words. He said that his “deepest fear is history repeating itself,” and added, “I’ve seen what happens when someone I love is commoditized to the point that they are no longer treated or seen as a real person.” When he spoke to Radio 4, Harry conceded that tabloids did not have as much power as they used to back when his mother was still alive.
Late October 2019 – Taking A Sabbatical
Later that month, the documentary of their South Africa tour went on the air. The Duchess was nearly in tears as she talked about what she went through. Harry revealed his dislike of the paparazzi and talked about the “different paths” he and William are taking. Harry and Meghan announced that they were taking a sabbatical, which led to reports that they were feeling burnt out and tired. Here is what the palace said about this: “The Duke and Duchess have a full schedule of engagements and commitments until mid-November, after which they will be taking some much-needed family time.”
November 2019 – Their Own Christmas
Harry and Meghan announced that they would not spend Christmas with the other royals in Buckingham Palace or Sandringham. No, they planned to go to Canada for six weeks and spend Thanksgiving in Los Angeles with her mom. The Palace released a statement that said, “The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are looking forward to extended family time towards the end of this month.” It continued, “Having spent the last two Christmases at Sandringham, Their Royal Highnesses will spend the holiday this year, as a new family, with the Duchess’ mother Doria Ragland. This decision is in line with the precedent set previously by other members of the Royal Family, and has the support of Her Majesty The Queen.”
December 2019 – Family Christmas Card
In December, the couple released their very first Christmas card with Archie. It got negative attention because they accused Meghan of manipulating the image. People claimed that she sharpened her face to stand out from the rest of the photo. She denied these claims but Janina Gavankar, her friend who took it, posted the original photo. She said, “Here’s the original that was sent out (cropped to fit IG.) And to The Mail, I see your campaign against my friend continues. Nice photoshop of my non-photoshopped image. Now may we all get back to the spirit of Christmas and not the spirit of maliciousness.”
January 7th, 2020 – Denial Of Major Announcements
In Canada House, London, the royal couple was able to thank the high commission for their holiday in Canada. They talked about the “warm hospitality” they enjoyed on the Christmas break. They got back to the U.K. with huge smiles and relaxed demeanors. A Vanity Fair journalist asked their PR team if their holiday was a “prequel” to their future decisions. They said that there is no major announcement coming up, which is why their ultimate plan is that much more mystifying.
January 8th, 2020 – Stepping Down
The following day, there were more rumors that Harry and Meghan wanted to move to Canada. No answers were given even though Buckingham Palace got confronted with the claims. On this day, the couple announced that they are relinquishing their posts as “senior royals.” In the announcement, they said that they wish to be financially free of the Crown and wanted to divide their time between North America and the United Kingdom. This news shocked everyone in the world, including the Palace! Rumors started to go around that Queen Elizabeth did not have any knowledge of this beforehand.
Early January 9th, 2020 – Emergency Meeting
When the news got to the Palace, the Queen set up an emergency meeting with the senior royals. The statement released by the Palace read, “Discussions with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are at an early stage. We understand their desire to take a different approach.” They also said that “these are complicated issues that will take time to work through.” People believe that Queen Elizabeth wanted to discuss what their relations with Harry and Meghan’s family would be like in the future. The BBC reported on it and said that the tone the Palace took regarding the news was one of “disappointment.”
January 9th, 2020 – Meghan’s Step Sister
Meghan’s half-sister Samantha had strong feelings about this decision as well. After the announcement was made, she talked to the press and told them that it felt like “a slap in the face.” She expounded on it by saying, “I think what is shocking is the lack of consideration for the people involved.” She also accused Meghan of “engaging in attention-getting behaviors.” She went on, “They stepped into the spotlight knowing what the duties were, knowing what the media would be like for them. If she wanted to be so private, she wouldn’t have sat at Wimbleton with 40 empty seats around her like a frame.”
Late January 9th, 2020 – Keeping Frogmore Cottage
Despite the big news, Harry and Meghan said that they plan to keep their sprawling countryside mansion. After all, they did just have it renovated using more than $3 million of taxpayer’s money. It was only natural that the papers did not take this announcement kindly. Despite this, the Palace and the Queen accepted their wishes. The statement read, “Frogmore Cottage will continue to be the property of Her Majesty the Queen. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will continue to use Frogmore Cottage – with the permission of Her Majesty The Queen – as their official residence as they continue to support the monarchy, and so that their family will always have a place to call home in the United Kingdom.”
January 10th, 2020 – Inflating The Issues
As expected, media outlets were in a frenzy thanks to the announcement by the couple. People decided to blow up the issue of their failure to give Queen Elizabeth or Buckingham Palace any heads up. Tabloids claimed that Her Majesty was “furious,” “sad,” and “dismayed” to hear about it. This did not make things any better for them. The press favored a negative take on the story and made it look like Harry and Meghan were being defiant and uncooperative, so folks waited to hear about their intentions.
January 12th, 2020 – Only 5%
The negative attention from the press only intensified in the next few days. They were starting to catch on to how they might plan to only leave 5% of their allowance behind. They outlined their wish to be free of the Sovereign Grant and let go of royal duties, but this only makes up a small part of their overall income. The Duke and Duchess get 95% of their income from Charles, who gets it from the Duchy of Cornwall. They did not mention any plans of giving this up. People called them disingenuous for cherry-picking a definition of “independent.” We will only know about the state of their finances in the future.
Early January 13th, 2020 – Sandringham Estate Talks
The royal controversy was discussed at Sandringham Estate in Norfolk not long after the announcement. The meeting went on for two hours and attended by Queen Elizabeth, Prince Charles, the Duke of Sussex, and the Duke of Cambridge. People expected Meghan to be present remotely because she was in Canada at the time. The meeting was held in the Long Library room at the estate. When it was over, Prince William and Prince Harry were driven away from the property in different cars.
January 13th, 2020 – A Joint Statement
Recently, there have been rumors circulating about a rift between the brothers. On January 13, they decided to set things straight. A story in The Times inferred that they had a falling out because William was not friendly toward Meghan. Their joint statement said, “Despite clear denials, a false story ran in a UK newspaper today speculating about the relationship between the Duke of Sussex and The Duke of Cambridge.” It went on, “For brothers who care so deeply about the issues surrounding mental health, the use of inflammatory language in this way is offensive and potentially harmful.”
Late January 13th, 2020 – Queen’s Statement
Queen Elizabeth released her own statement after the meeting and expressed support for Harry and Meghan. “Today my family had very constructive discussions on the future of my grandson and his family,” she said, “My family and I are entirely supportive of Harry and Meghan’s desire to create a new life as a young family.” However, she admitted, “We would have preferred them to remain full-time working members of the Royal Family.” Still, they “respect and understand their wish to live a more independent life as a family” since “Harry and Meghan have made clear that they do not want to be reliant on public funds.” She acknowledged that there needs to be a period of transition, so they need to split their time between the UK and Canada. She concluded, “There is some more work to be done, but I have asked for final decisions to be reached in the coming days.”
Early January 14th, 2020 – Meghan Did Not Join In
The tabloids claimed that Meghan did not call into the summit or Sandringham Estate. The source is not verified, but the word still spread anyway. Meghan had been in Canada, but Harry was there so the Palace allegedly did not think she had to join in. The rumors only added to the speculation that the Duchess is not treated like a true member of the royal family. It is either that or she wanted to opt out. At any rate, we can tell you that she did not come with Harry back to the U.K. after the holidays.
Late January 14th – Her First Sighting
The first sighting of Meghan was a week after she and Harry made their shocking announcement. She was photographed boarding a seaplane at Victoria Harbour Airport. At last, she was leaving the $14 million house where she and Harry spent the holidays. She left to pay the Downtown Eastside Women’s Center in Vancouver in order to “discuss issues affecting the community.” While she was hit with a lot of negative press, we are glad to see her in high spirits. Could she be excited about their independence?
Early January 15th – Back To Work
The day after that, there were photos of the Duchess out and about at the Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre. “She was very interested in what goes on for women in this community, who we all know are marginalized women who’ve faced many challenges and barriers to their wellbeing,” explained the acting executive director, “She was interested, she was informed, she had great questions, followed up with questions on things that the staff had spoken about.” It did not take before rumors claimed that she set it up at the last minute. The manager at the shelter confirmed that they only got a day’s notice.
January 15th, 2020 – Love For Sports
In the middle of all this drama, there were other important things on Harry’s mind. The Wednesday after the announcement, he shared some exciting news with his Instagram followers. He announced that the Invictus Games will be held in Düsseldorf, Germany in 2022. He said, “I hope everyone in Germany is ready for what will be an incredible week of sport!” Without a doubt, he is invested in these games. It was his first media appearance after he broke the news that he planned to leave his royal duties.
January 15th, 2020 – A Canadian Warning
The Globe and Mail the biggest Canadian newspaper had select words for Harry and Meghan. The piece said, “Canada is not a halfway house for anyone looking to get out of Britain while remaining a royal.” It went on, “Princes are not shipped over here when no useful duties can be found for them on the other side of the Atlantic. This country’s unique monarchy, and its delicate yet essential place in our constitutional system, means that a royal resident – the prince is sixth in the line of succession – is not something that Canada can allow. It breaks an unspoken constitutional taboo.”
Late January 15th, 2020 – Keeping Their Duties
William and Kate returned to their duties on January 15. According to the press release, they went to Bradford to check out “a number of projects which support the community and promote cohesion within it.” They looked to be in high spirits during the visit and dodged questions about Meghan and Harry. They stopped in for a milkshake lesson by getting behind the counter of MyLahore, a Pakistan-inspired restaurant that explained the process to them. Of course, they then drank their creations.
Mid-January 2020 – The Public
So much has already happened within the royal family even if it has not even been a year into 2020. People, of course, took to social media to have their say on Megxit. Twitter saw a mix of positive and negative responses. One user said, “I’d leave my entire family for Meghan Markle too if I had the option,” but another said, “In years to come, Meghan Markle will be known as the person who brought down the monarchy.” At any rate, most people appeared to agree that the actress was behind the exit.
January 18th, 2020 – The Queen Follows Up
As promised, the Queen gave another announcement about the decision of her grandson and his wife. She said, “Following many months of conversations, I am pleased that together we have found a constructive and supportive way forward for my grandson and his family.” It was quite a shock since it suggested that the royal family knew of the plan for a while now. She reiterated that Harry, Meghan, and Archie would “always be much-loved members of my family” and that she is supportive of “their wish for a more independent life.” She also added, [I am] particularly proud of how Meghan has so quickly become one of the family.” The statement emphasized how much she values her family.
January 18th, 2020 – Recognizing Their Problems
Queen Elizabeth displayed empathy for Harry and Meghan with her statement. She wrote, “I recognize the challenges they have experienced,” which confirmed that the press coverage was a factor in the decision. She also recognized the work they have performed as senior royals by saying they will keep honoring, “the commonwealth and beyond.”
January 18th, 2020 – Leaving It For Them
She also said that Frogmore Cottage, which they renovated, “will remain their U.K. family home.” The couple announced that Canada would be their main location so that they can lead an independent life. However, the way the Queen phrased it gave room for change. While unlikely right now, the vagueness of her words that the time they would spend in the U.K. and North America is yet to be decided. At any rate, Queen Elizabeth owns the home and shows her support by keeping it for them.
January 18th, 2020 – Their Response
In the follow-up statement, the Sussex royals outlined that they planned to drop their HRH titles but plan to keep “Harry, Duke of Sussex,” and “Meghan, Duchess of Sussex.” They also said that they are going to be “embarking on a new chapter” of their lives and therefore drawing a clear distinction between these chapters. “With the Queen’s blessing,” they are retaining their associations and patronages as well. It was said, “While they can no longer formally represent the Queen, the Sussexes have made clear that everything they do will continue to uphold the values of Her Majesty.” While there has been a shift in their roles, they stressed that they will remain on good terms with the Queen.
January 18th, 2020 – Paying It Back
In the statement, they mentioned that they want to pay back the $3 million they spent renovating Frogmore Cottage. They said that they got lots of negative publicity about it as senior royals. It makes sense that they want to use their own money now that they are stepping down. The statement read, “The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have shared their wish to repay Sovereign Grant expenditure for the refurbishment of Frogmore Cottage, which will remain their UK family home.”
January 18th, 2020 – Losing Military Positions
Harry had to drop his military positions as part of their decision. The statement said, “As agreed in this new arrangement, they understand that they are required to step back from royal duties, including official military appointments.” This meant that he would no longer be the Honorary Air Commandant of RAF Honington, Captain-General of the Royal Marines, and Commodore-in-Chief of the Small Ships and Diving, Royal Naval Command. He also has to drop his Commonwealth Youth Ambassador position.
January 2020 – High-Profile Celebs
Apparently, not everyone is angry at the decision of the Duke and Duchess. Many celebrities have stepped up to support them in their decision. After all, they rub shoulders with many popular stars. Actress Tiffany Haddish stood up for the couple when she appeared on Watch What Happens Live by saying, “I think they’re wonderful, and whatever the decision is, we have to respect it.” In reference to Meghan, the comedian also said, “She’s really gorgeously humble and caring. That’s how we do it in South Central LA, baby! She come from them Baldwin Hills!”
January 18th, 2020 – Her Father
It came as a shock when Thomas Markle, Meghan’s dad, launched an attack on the couple. He said, “When they got married they took on an obligation, and the obligation is to be part of the Royals and to represent the Royals. And it would be foolish for them not to.” He went on, “This is one of the greatest long-living institutions ever. They are destroying it, they are cheapening it, making it shabby… they shouldn’t be doing this.” These harsh words shocked the public, and probably Harry and Meghan as well. It is believed that they have not spoken with him even prior to the royal wedding.
January 18th, 2020 – Calling Them “Embarrassing”
He did not just stop there either. He had choice words for them by saying, “With Meghan and Harry separating from the Royals… it’s disappointing because she actually got every girl’s dream. Every young girl wants to become a princess and she got that and now she’s tossing that away… it looks like she’s tossing that away for money.” He continued, “Apparently $3 million and a 26-room home isn’t enough for them… it is kind of embarrassing to me.” Not only that, but he also said, “I think both of them are turning into lost souls at this point. I don’t know what they’re looking for. I don’t think they know what they are looking for.”
January 18th, 2020 – Living Normally Again
On this day, Meghan showed that she will resume certain aspects of her pre-royalty life. She drove out to fetch her pilates instructor friend Heather Dorak from the Vancouver airport. She is believed to have flown out to support the Duchess and gave a happy greeting before hopping in the car. Meghan drove the vehicle, but she was accompanied by a bodyguard in the passenger seat. It looked like she was already on the way to easing back into her old life!
January 19th, 2020 – His Joke
After going through the archives, tabloids discovered footage of the couple joking with director Jon Favreau about giving Meghan extra work on the side. Below, you can see Harry and Meghan smiling with Beyonce and Jay-Z after running into each other at the July 2019 premiere of The Lion King.“If anyone needs any extra voiceover work…” Harry said before Meghan interjected, “That’s really why we’re here – it’s the pitch!” Harry went with it by saying “… just not Scar.”
January 19th, 2020 – The Queen And Archie
The papers started to discuss the Queen and Master Archie. What would happen to their relationship now that he would be living in North America? Why was she not present on his Christening in July? Is she worried that she will lose connection with the entire family after the move? It is said that the Queen is “very sad” and has “barely seen” her great-grandson since he was born on May 6, 2019. Keep in mind that he also spent his first Christmas away from the royal family since he was in Canada!
January 19th, 2020 – Netflix Confirms Interest
Ted Sarandos, the chief content officer at Netflix, confirmed that he was interested in working with the couple. After the news released the footage of them with Jon Favreau, the public wonders what the “independent” couple now plans to do. He said, “Who wouldn’t be interested? Yes, sure,” when asked about Harry and Meghan.
January 19th, 2020 –Nonoo Teases About Special Collaboration
A fashion designer by the name of Misha Nonoo is Meghan’s close friend. She arrived in Toronto on the 19th. That day, she also teased her followers on Instagram by asking them to guess the “special collaboration” in the works. Meghan was already helping promote the “Husband Shirt” on the website and even wore it during her first public appearance with her husband. They teamed up for the Smart Works charity clothing collection before, so a fashion collaboration together is not impossible.
January 19th, 2020 – Harry Talks At Last
During his charity dinner, Prince Harry gave an emotional speech. He talked about the decision by saying, “It was so many months of talks after so many years of challenges and I know I haven’t always gotten it right but as far as this goes there really was no other option.” He also shocked people when he said, “Once Meghan and I were married, we were excited. We were hopeful and we were here to serve. For those reasons it brings me great sadness that it has come to this.”
January 19th, 2020 – Without Public Funding
Harry tried to make it clear that they were not trying to get out of their responsibilities. He said, “We’re not walking away and we certainly aren’t walking away from you. Our hope was to continue serving the queen, the commonwealth and my military associations but without public funding.” These words are questionable later on, however. Still, he added, “I will continue to be the same man who holds his country dear and dedicates his life to supporting the causes, charities, and military communities that are so important to me.” It is worth noting that this speech was his personal perspective.
January 20th, 2020 – Still Paying Millions
On this day, the public found out that taxpayers are footing the £7.6 million security bill even though Harry and Meghan are stepping down. There was no mention of this in the official statement of the Palace and the couple. Ex-Royal Canadian Mounted Policeman Chris Matthew, who has kept the royals safe abroad, said that the annual security bill will rival the Prime Minister’s. At the same time, it was understood that Charles will be supporting Harry and Meghan through his private investment income. The “Sussex Royal” brand, which the couple got license to expand, will likely appear more in the future. Still, we are not sure how well it will develop since the Queen is sensitive about royal credential use.
January 20th, 2020 – Patching Things Up
