Imagine what it would be like to get to work to embark on an exciting new adventure. This excitement may make you more intrigued to go to work and become in love with your job. Say goodbye to the dull and boring and hello to the excitement of a new task. You may be thinking that your dead-end job will never bring you excitement, but that’s where you are wrong. This logger never imaged that he would find something so memorizing that day at work but wait till you hear what happened.
Every day at work this logger and his teammates are given enough trees to cut that will keep them busy for the entire day. He was always ready with his power saw, ready to take on the construction of the day. He and his coworkers were getting ready with their power saws in hand when suddenly they realized that they had to put their work on hold. Suddenly they saw something that caught their attention.
Just Another Day
Everything was going well for the team of Georgia Kraft woodcutters when suddenly one specific tree was beginning to be cut down. This one tree was remarkable and led to something intriguing. for the team of loggers.
A Remarkable Experience
To this day they remember this experience with such happiness and satisfaction. There has been an attempt by science to shed some light on this experience, but it remains difficult to process.
It was a relatively overcast morning when they found something that would leave them curious and confused. They waited until they found some answers. They were desperate to understand what was the secret behind the strange tree, but they knew they had to wait it out.
Not Many Fans
Not many people are happy about the idea of logging being a job since they are getting down trees in nature. It makes sense, we have beautiful trees in nature and they are here cutting them all down.
In Jasper City, this profession is more tolerated because most families have a connection to the industry. There is a remarkable city in Pickens County, Georgia and it is located near mountains like Bent Tree, Big Canoe, and the Sharp Mountain Preserve.
Not Good Wood
In the 20th century, they were at risk of being wiped out by a fungal infection. Thankfully, the managed to survive and these special trees began to grow around Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, New Hampshire, and even Novia Scotia. However, this tree, in particular, had never been seen before.
A Great Source Of Money
Around the mountains close to the city lies an American Chesnut Tree. This tree gives the city a stable source of income because they are worth alot. This type of tree bursts from the ground faster than oak trees.
Back in 1980, around 7 or 8 workers from Georgia Kraft Co. left their homes a little past 10 in the morning. They had plenty of work to do before the was over and they divided up the tasks as soon as they arrived. It was all going normally until they returned from their lunch break. After they got back to their tasks, one of them noticed something strange about a specific tree.
They were in line with their schedule and were working hard to cut down most of the Chestnut trees that were going to fall. They had just a few left, including a very light one that they assumed, was hollow.
A Secret That Made It Difficult
When they first noticed the tree they figured it wouldn’t be difficult to chop it down. They thought it would be just like any other tree that needed to be cut down. However, they soon learned that this tree had something that made it more unique and difficult to chop.
As soon as they felt the tree trunk, they began cutting it into smaller chunks to transport it easier. They went about the routine as usual, when suddenly one of the loggers realized that there was something strange about the tree.
While they thought it was hollow at first glance, this wasn’t the full story. If it were hollow then the light would pass through the trunk. This was not what happened and they soon understand that there was something stuck in the tree.
From a distance, it appeared as if the tree trunk had a black hole inside. From any which angle, this tree was truly fascinating. They could even confuse it for having a stem growing from the tree, but what they found was much weirder than this.
The loggers were very bewildered, trying to understand together what was blocking the light from passing. They soon discovered another problem, who would be the one to check what was blocking the light?
There were a lot of suspicions going around and the townspeople were not volunteering to help. It was clear to everyone that this wasn’t a dangerous project, but still, their hesitation was valid.
The loggers were at a loss but then one finally stood up and took on the responsibility. He was in search of answers and that meant going inside the trunk. He was very courageous and inserted half of his body in the trunk to get a closer view.
Suddenly, he jumped out in a panic and he gave himself a few seconds to regroup and explain what he saw inside. Suddenly, the rest of the loggers gathered around when he was ready to share what he saw.
The rest of the workers looked at him with confused looks on their faces, while he remained in shock. They could not control themselves and they were dying to hear what was going on. Finally, he explained that he saw a beast inside.
He seemed in complete shock and horror but the loggers did not believe him. They all stopped their work because of how terrible he was reacting. This was something new to them and everyone wanted to be part of it.
What It Was
Some other loggers peaked inside to see what he was going on about. The rest of them all had strange looks on their faces, as they were confused about how something got stuck inside. Nobody understood what it was.
For The Pros
This was horrifying for all the loggers and the first time they had ever seen something remotely like this. This kind of discovery was something that only archeologist and scientists find, but this time it was found by ordinary loggers.
One thing was for certain, and that was that they could not use this tree. However, they were sure that whatever was inside made this tree valuable. They quickly phoned their manager to explain what they found, but he said just to get back to work.
From afar, the tree trunk looked almost like a creature jumping out. Other loggers had ideas of their own, however, nobody knew what it was was. The loggers spent the day discussing different ideas.
A Living Being
There were so many options thrown out, but everyone agreed on one thing. It was clear that whatever it was, was a living being at one point in time. This revelation made them extra curious and they were eager to know how it got inside.
The placement of the monster inside the tree trunk made it seem like it was just trying to move but instead, it got stuck in time. All of the loggers were concerned about what happened to this animal.
Getting A Better Look
While so many ideas were thrown in the air, there could only be one correct reasoning. They noticed the teeth that hinted something. As they examined it closer they started to notice more details that they didn’t see before.
The creature had characteristics that included a long snout, paws, and sharp teeth. They could see these features clearly, but only once they discovered it was a dog did they begin to understand the mystery. They didn’t know what to feel once they heard it was a once-living dog.
A Mummified Dog
The loggers started describing it differently, some said it was a mummified dog. However, it was still unclear why this mummified dog was there in the first place. It wasn’t like he was buried in a coffin from ancient Egypt.
Frozen In Time
There was no indication that the dog was mummified even slightly. It just looked like a dog who was instructed to stay there until he died. This seems pretty morbid, but what else could we assume?
The story continued and the loggers were mystified about how the dog managed to get inside in the first place. The thoughts were running through their heads and some said maybe he was running from something, but in the meantime, they had to put it aside and finish their daily work. They began to think about what they could do with it.
All the loggers agreed that they couldn’t leave the tree uncut, as it would be a bad financial decision. This was such a special discovery and they couldn’t just chop it up. Instead, they pondered the idea of not cutting it down.
The Trunk With A Story
They soon learned that the trunk had a special story and lesson to learn from. After they finished their assignments for the day, the loggers took the trunk to the rightful place, and they felt that was the appropriate decision.
They were hoping that their questions would lead to answers about the dog and the mysterious tree. They couldn’t understand what caused them to find this discovery, but in the end, the question was whether they found out the truth or not!
A Long Road
The best thing they could do was bring the trunk to scientists to help understand what exactly happened. Unfortunately, they were going to have to wait because the scientists did not find any answers until almost a year later.
A year had passed since they found the discovery and the scientists finally got back to them about what exactly occured. The loggers felt a range of emotions upon hearing the news. While they were relieved they were also a bit sad.
In Waycross, there is a museum located there called The Southern Forest World, which was created by the Industry of Forestry Of the Southeastern United States. It contains mementos and artifacts associated with wood items from the colonial era until today.
The dog in the tree trunk landed at this museum as an artifact. It was donated by the loggers, as a thank you to the authorities who helped them uncover the truth. The museum was not even open yet when the loggers brought the tree trunk there.
They had a feeling that the exhibit would be successful but the museum wanted to know the history behind such an artifact. Unfortunately, all they knew at the time was that the loggers found the canine in the trunk.
A Biological Anthropologist To The Rescue
They were determined to find out more, and that’s when Kristina Killgrove, biological anthropologist intervened. She was very knowledgable and she was able to assist them with the right advice and information.
Bottom Of It All
She listened to the ideas the loggers through in terms of mummification, but she dismissed them all and said it was not possible. Finally, she provided the real answers that everyone was waiting for.
Kristine, given she was an expert, was able to break it down beginning with the tissue decay process. She explained what happens after death, she said, microbes start eating up the tissue after death. She explained that they grow, reproduce and then take over the body.
What they discovered was that the Chesnut trees had tannin and desiccant, an organic substance that soaks up moisture. This was unique to the species, and nature prevented it from doing so. Therefore, the body was preserved because the lack of moisture stopped the microbes from attacking the body tissue.
Hiding Its Scent
The director of Southern Forest World explained: “Anything that would eat dead flesh would never know he was in the tree.” He went on to say that any smell that maybe was there would go through the trunk.
Bertha explained that the story was that it was a hunting dog who was chasing something else. It was four years at the time and died in 1960. He was likely going after a squirrel or raccoon.
A Relentless Dog
It was a persistent dog who never stopped trying, even until he was 28 ft on the whole! However, he could not escape and ended up dying inside. While he probably tried to get out of there, he may do not notice how narrow it was on top.
The museum reported that there was an upward draft of air inside the tree. This created a scent of a real animal that was carried away, but normally it would be attracted by insects or other animal feeding organisms. The hollowness of the tree made it so that there were dry circumstances and the animal’s skin hardened due to the tannic acid of the oak.
Only in 2002 was the dog named and he was set on display at the museum and was in the center of all the species. Today, he is the ambassador of the museum and his photo is used in many postcards and promotional campaigns.
This dog was finally named “Stuckie,” after a contest to choose the names. This decision was made against other contenders like Chipper,” “Dogwood,” and “Stuckie.” Everyone was happy with the last name.
One Step Ahead
One logger described the trunk coffin as “pegan logs,” that can be purchased at Stuckey stores. The museum did not want to get in any trademark issues so they changed the spelling, to avoid a million-dollar lawsuit.
