Ever since Meghan Markle became a member of the royal family in 2018, it has been very apparent that she has many unfairly criticized and condemned for doing the exact same things many other royals are applauded and complimented for. In particular, in very own sister-in-law, Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge. What most people don’t realize is that a lot of the mistreatment over the years has come from the media. And we all know how harsh the press can be, especially towards the most famous celebrities, like the royal family. Let’s take a closer look at how the media treat Meghan compared to Kate.
The Duchess Slant
It seems as though the media keeps criticizing Megahn for breaching royal protocol. And what exactly might that be? It appears that the Duchess of Sussex crossed her legs a few times while attending royal events, instead of sitting like a royal. The popular pose is called “The Duchess Slant” However, there have been plenty of times in the past where many other royal women have been seen crossing their legs as well. Some of them include the late Princess Diana, Kate Middleton, and even the Queen herself.
Christmas With The Queen
Back in 2019, there was a lot of talk around the fact that Prince Harry and Megha Markle were skipping the Queen’s Christmas lunch so the two could be with Meghan’s mom. However, the public seemed to have forgotten that just a few years prior to this, William and Kate did the exact same thing. In 2016, instead of having a family gathering with the Queen, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge went to Berkshire for the holidays to be with Kate’s parents.
The media can be truly fascinating yet completely brutal, and this is just one of the many times. Of course, we do understand that fashion within the royal family is very particular but there is definitely no need to scrutinize people who are simply trying their best. In June 2019, we see The Daily Mail complementing Kate’s fashion success, while just one month later the same newspaper comment on the way Meghan dresses suggesting how they much prefer British royal fashion. Quite harsh, don’t you think?
Try Walk A Mile In My Shoes…
It appears as though Meghan Markle has broken a few fashion regulations since marrying into the royal family. Or has she? The headlines were, “Meghan is subjected to double standards that are blatant in their intent to frame her as an ignorant, uncouth, and unfit for the aristocracy, much less the royal family.” This was just after she and Prince Harry were on tour to Australis, New Zealand, and the Pacific Islands. Meghan wore wedge shoes during her time there. But many years before this incident, Kate had been seen many times wearing different kinds of wedged sandals and was even praised for it by the media. The tabloids published a headline saying, “Kate Middleton just proved that these are the most versatile shoes of the summer”.
Do Not Shut The Door!
It turns out that one of the many strict royals that royals have to follow is that are encouraged not to close their own car door, once they are out of the vehicle. This not related to any form of etiquette, but more for safety reasons. As all the royals travel in style, their vehicles are self-locking doors and if heaven forbid something goes wrong, they cannot get back into the car. In 2018, it seemed as though Meghan caused a huge stir as she closed her own car door while attending a royal engagement. But, Kate was seen doing the same thing while getting out of the car with Princess Charlotte. Go figure!
The Duchess of Sussex’s, first official event with Queen Elizabeth went well except for one major thing: Meghan Markle was shamed for not wearing a hat while the Queen was wearing one. Insiders reveal that royal protocol says all women must wear hats to all formal royal occasions, this is an etiquette rule that dates back to the 1950s. So many eyebrows were raised when Meghan was not wearing a hat. People questioned whether this was a mistake or not? Despite the fact that the press notices everything about Meghan, perhaps they forgot the few times that both Kate and Camilla didn’t wear hats either.
Out of all the things that the press could have chosen to taunt the newly married Meghan Markle they chose this. And what was quite interesting was that soon after Kate and Williams’s wedding, similar headlines were very posotve. The press released content saying that Meghan Markle’s wedding bouquet was dangerous and could have posed a serious health risk to Princess Charlotte. But according to a professional florist, this could not have been true.
A new mother-to-be is always so proud of her bump and the fact that she is pregnant. That’s pretty natural, right? According to The Daily Mail, when Kate was pregnant with Prince Louis (her third pregnancy) they praised and complimented the duchess on the adorable way in which she would cradle her belly in public. However, just one year later when Meghan was pregnant with baby Archie and cradled her stomach in public, she was completely judged by the press. How is this okay?
These two pictures of the Queen and Meghan were actually snapped relatively close together – time-wise. According to royal insiders, the Queen was having a photo shoot and decided to pose the way she wanted to. One of the poses was of her hands in her pocket. Of course, we still think she looks so elegant. Nevertheless, while Price Harry and Meghan were in New Zealand, she was caught with her hands in her pockets but was slammed and ridiculed for her behavior by the press.
