He thought it would be just another ordinary day, but little did he know everything was about to change. He brought his focus back to the sound of his feet crunching in the sand, the warm and pleasant breeze. Instantly, he started feeling better. Things weren’t all bad. They would manage, somehow. All of a sudden, he heard a shriek and turned around to see his daughter on her knees, hunched over something in the sand.
It was a warm May morning in Bendigo, Australia. One unsuspecting family went about their day. It just so happened to be Mother’s Day as well. He got the kids up and dressed early, and they all surprised their mother with the traditional breakfast in bed.
Little did they know that fate had somewhat of a surprise for all of them in store. This would change their lives.
Lucky was a mixed-breed. When young Ellie spotted him in their local shelter three years earlier, she immediately fell in love with him. While the Garrett family initially intended to adopt a puppy, there was just something special about Lucky.
When they took him home, they never could have imagined just how lucky their new dog truly was.
Going For A Walk
By the time all the breakfast dishes were cleared away, Lucky was frantic. He was scratching at the door, squealing with anticipation, and pleading with his eyes. It was time for his usual walk. “You go ahead,” their mother said happily. And so, off they went: dad, Ellie, Tina, and Lucky.
They didn’t suspect they would soon come across something they never even dreamed of seeing.
John really tried to hide his worries from his kids, but he kept on thinking about unpaid bills while he walked. They recently had fallen on tough times, and his daughters’ college funds were all but depleted. Remembering his earlier days spent prospecting in the hills nearby, he couldn’t help but wonder just how different their lives would be if he had found that elusive gold.
He felt like a failure. He kept walking with his eyes on the horizon. However, his eyes should have been on the ground.
Bendigo is famous for its gold rush back in the 1800s. Over the course of 50 years, more gold was found in Bendigo than anywhere else in the world. However, the city was built on rich gold-bearing quartz reefs and still hasn’t given up all its treasure. Luck was definitely on John and his family’s side that day.
John walked a little ahead of his daughters while keeping an eye out for treacherous rocks. They were reaching Lucky’s favorite spot – the shore of the lake. John turned around to see Ellie taking off Lucky’s leash. Instantly, the dog was off. With his wagging tail and lolling tongue, his expression showed pure joy. John couldn’t help but smile at the dog’s reaction.
All of a sudden, he heard a shriek. His blood ran cold.
Thinking Of The Worst
Turning around, John saw Ellie on her knees and immediately thought the worst. He ran as fast as he could to where she was crouched. However, he would soon realize that the shriek wasn’t one of terror, it was from excitement. Ellie was holding something that glittered so brilliantly that John stopped in his tracks.
Then, she looked up and said something that would change John’s world completely.
“Dad, is this gold?” she excitedly yelled. In a daze at his daughter’s find, he whispered, “I think it might be”. He reached for the treasure in his daughter’s hands and turned it over, inspecting it carefully.
At that moment, he realized the nugget was huge – it fit neatly into the palm of his hand. He knew he needed to find a scale – quickly!
