This woman had coils around her neck for years in order to elongate it, and when she finally takes them off, the results are unbelievable. What did she look like? Why did she do this in the first place? Read on to see what these neck coils did to her body!
Why They Use It
Anthropologists have discovered several reasons why people wear these coils. One theory was that they made the women from this tribe seem less attractive, which served as their protection from slavery. On the other hand, another theory suggested that it was the opposite.
In some cultures, both men and women wear these neck coils. It’s more common for women in most cases, but sometimes you will find men doing it as well. These coils are seen as a symbol of beauty. After a while of wearing them your neck will appear to be longer, but it’s not because your neck actually stretched, but rather because your collarbone has been pushed down.
It is believed that these coils made them appear more attractive. In general, slender necks are deemed appealing and could be achieved with the help of these things. At any rate, this sort of body modification is special within the tribe.
The Dangers And Risks
It is not surprising to hear that people worry about the safety of such a practice. If you are not familiar with this, it probably looks dangerous. In reality, this is a safe practice as it does not really elongate the neck.
Instead, they push down on the collar bone and compress the ribs. Over time, it can get risky. According to the Kayan women, they wear these necklaces because it is a part of their cultural identity.
Sydney V. Smith is a 28-year-old girl who always dreamed of becoming a “giraffe woman.” For the past three years she has tried to extend her neck by wearing about 11 copper rings.
Sydney was always fascinated with body modification, specifically the tribal women of Thailand and Burma. ” “I’ve always had a long neck,” said Sydney. “In middle school, they called me ‘giraffe girl’. Then I saw pictures of the long-necked tribes in Thailand and Burma in National Geographic and I became fascinated with them.”
After seeing pictures of long-necked tribes in Thailand and Burma she decided to cut up coat hangers and wrap them around her neck when she went to sleep. While her parents found this to be completely ridiculous, she persisted. She really thought that this nighttime ritual would help elongate her neck.
It was clear to Sydney that her neck was longer than other people, but not in a freaky way. She began to consider if she wanted to wear the rings and always be considered the “long neck girl.” After some time she realized she was actually attached to the rings.
Slow And Steady
Even though Sydney is not a member of the Kayan tribe, she chose to take on this challenge on her own. Sadly, it was tougher for her since she was already physically mature when she made the decision.
Sydney actually enjoyed the pressure on the top of her neck and shoulders. She was searching for comfort and exhilaration, and this was where to look. In 2011, she began wearing a tight-fitting copper necklace fit to her requirements.
Adjusting To The Rings
Her age meant that her body did not have more growing to do. She decided to go about this slowly and only added more rings as she got used to them. After some time, she already had 10 rings around her neck!
Sydney was always rather shy about showing off her neck rings. When she was living in Maryland she even wore thick turtleneck sweaters to cover them up. She also worked in behind the scenes restaurant jobs, to avoid unwanted attention.
Her rings are customized by a friend. They are also soldered around her neck but they do feature a special screw so that they can be taken apart in case of medical emergencies. But for her, they are permanently attached
Through the process of putting the rings around her neck, Sydney says it was done safely, however she did manage to get burned a little. She also thinks her neck is around 10-11 inches long and she couldn’t be more grateful for the rings!
A Worldwide Sensation
You can tell that things are getting serious when you are featured in the comic books by Ripley’s Believe It Or Not. If you are not familiar with the show, you should know that they feature the most unusual and bizarre stories out there.
In The Media
Her story made the cut for them! It did not take long before her story spread. What she decided to do was a very unique thing- not something people do very often if it’s not part of their culture- so it caught the media’s attention.
A Comic Book Character
Not a lot of people can say that they have a comic book character inspired by them. We are not sure if Sydney has a superpower, but we bet she could stand in for Elastigirl or Plastic Man if she really had to. At any rate, she definitely attracted a lot of attention!
This photo came with the caption “Progress.” You do not have to be a rocket scientist to see what she meant. The coils grew from the first few days, and there seemed to be changed to her physique already.
In the end, the coils on her neck would get so heavy that Sydney would have no choice but to take them off. By then, she had 15 rings coiled around her neck. They weighed five pounds!
Not Worth It
We know it might not sound like a lot of weight, but the truth is that it will get tiring when you have it on 24/7. For some people, it would start to feel like torture.
Dr. Jonathan Nissanoff an orthopedic surgeon from Southern California says that he doesn’t recommend anyone doing this because it can severely injure the nerves in the neck. He adds, that at her age is already done growing, thus she is just stretching her skin but her neck won’t stretch anymore.
Not Giving Up
Despite this, nothing was stopping Sydney. She considered adding the 12th ring even after hearing doctors’ concerns. She also wanted to make money from her appearance. “I’d like to work as a specialty model, but my original intent was not to exploit myself,” she said. “However, it seems to be my calling.
However, the coils would later take its toll on her body. She would have no choice but to take them off. Her health came first, and if these rings were not working out for Sydney, she wasn’t going to risk her health and her life just to experiment with the rings anymore.
They Dominated Her Life
During one of the more recent interviews she had, Sydney explained her reasons for taking the painful coils off of her neck: “I couldn’t function properly as a long neck woman with fifteen rings around my neck in the United States of America.”
Her Life Changed
We are sure that it was hard for her to keep these tight coils wrapped around her neck all the time! She must have began to notice the things that she previously took for granted.
All About The Rings
People could not help but feel intrigued in some way when they took a look at the accessories. However, she started to get tired of all the questions five years later. The rings made her feel isolated as well.
Where Did Sydney Go
“It was always about the rings, it wasn’t about Sydney anymore. I tried sticking my neck out to make it work but logic kicked in after a while.” We can’t imagine that this was a fun feeling.
Freedom At Last
Five years after she got them, she decided that it was high time for her to take them off. She realized that they were simply not worth the effort. The burden of the coils made her life difficult.
She tried to explain it this way: “Unless you are willing to completely isolate yourself and you’re a trust fund baby and don’t ever need to leave the house, don’t ever need to drive, then maybe you can pull it off.”
Still The Giraffe Woman
Even though she has since taken off the coils, she still considers herself to be the “Giraffe Woman.” She does not regret what she did in the past, even though they have changed her body in certain ways.
It Took A Toll
Sydney got severe bruising in the collarbone area, but this is not surprising since she did have them on for five years! With the toll it took on her body, she seems lucky that it was only bruising.
In A Lot Of Pain
She first said that her neck was “very weak, kind of like arms on a toothpick.” While this does not conjure the most pleasant images, it is important to hear the consequences of her actions.
Trying To Recover
Even though she suffered from bruises and stiffness, the doctors informed her that the recovery was going along quicker than they thought it would. It seems like she must have gotten really lucky in this situation!
