Everyone understands how traveling can be somewhat intense at times. From booking the flights to packing up and getting ready, it’s a whole ordeal that takes a lot of time and effort. It becomes an exciting adventure when someone goes on holiday and treats themselves, though. It can be all new and exciting, to relax and discover a new place, to get somewhere nice. Emmit had been looking forward to it. He didn’t know he was going to find it challenging to get to his destination.
The Words Were Out
Emmit had no clue that while he was eager to travel, somebody would spoil it all for him. Before he was able to catch himself, the words escaped his lips. The woman had been harassing him for a while now, and he had had enough. The words he said hit her like a ton of bricks, making her recoil, looking scandalized. But how dare she act this way? He only said what everybody was thinking. All the people around them began clapping slowly. How could it have escalated so quickly in this situation?
You have to understand how stressful the whole experience can be if you have ever been to an airport and have flown at least once in your life. No wonder, with delayed flights, long lines, and lost luggage, people are easily frustrated. However, Emmit did not want anything to get him down that day. He had already been saving for months for this trip and even decided to splurge on a first-class ticket as a birthday present. An entitled woman was about to ruin his day.
In the Dominican Republic, Emmit went. He has worked extra hard over the past few weeks to make sure his workload has been cleared up. He even planned to fly out the day before his birthday to have enough time to celebrate and relax when he got there. For just about any scenario, he planned and prepared. The nastiness he was about to encounter was the only thing he did not plan.
He hummed and tapped his feet while Emmit was waiting in line. Life has been terrific. He made himself something, and now he was reaping the rewards of his hard work. Working as a music executive meant working for long hours in the studio, but it all seemed to be worth it right now. He could not wait to kick back and relax with some much-needed R&R. He had no idea somebody was about to try and take it all away from him.
A Voice Behind
He watched the line calmly, almost too much to carry in anticipation of boarding. As he felt someone attempting to push through, however, he heard a loud voice behind him. “Excuse me… Excuse me…” the voice said. He turned around, not realizing that to find out what this woman wanted, he was about to get into the confrontation of his life.
The woman blatantly gave Emmit a once-over, slowly and purposefully looking up and down at him, taking everything in. In the same line as her, he was obviously not supposed to be there in her own mind. She pointed at her chin, pointing to a sign that the line had been reserved for the first class’s flyers. Her mouth was practically a sneer when she spat out the confusing words. Emmit was genuinely amazed.
“I believe you may be in the wrong place,” the woman said. However, she told him to get out of the line before Emmit could correct her and say he was flying first-class. By rudely yelling, she tried to get in front of him, “Let us through.” Emmit attempted to stay calm and to diffuse the situation. With this woman, something was wrong.
Emmit looked at this woman, feeling puzzled. He explained calmly that he was meant to be in this line. However, she insisted, saying, “I believe you may be in the wrong place; you need to let us through. This line is for priority booking.” She had a condescending tone in her voice that she did not even try to hide. With her, Emmit tried reasoning. “Priority meaning first-class, correct?” Even so, the woman refused to let go of it. Emmit would understand what she was implying soon enough.
Keeping The Peace
“Yes,” the woman snapped, “Now excuse me. They will call y’all after we board.” This was when Emmit became confused. Why was this woman so sure he was in the wrong line waiting for her? Why was she singling him out? He started getting annoyed. He took his ticket out of his wallet and showed it to the woman to prove that he was supposed to be where he was. While he owed no explanation of any kind to her, he thought the argument would put an end to it. But he had been mistaken.
Making A Scene
The woman looked absolutely scandalized. She frowned and loudly told her friends something, making sure Emmit could hear her as well. “He must be military or something,” she moaned, passive-aggressively. “But we paid for our seats, so he still should have to wait.” Emmit couldn’t trust what she was saying. However, he didn’t want to create a scene at the airport. He tried to think of excuses for her behavior. She presumed that he could not afford a first-class ticket. Was she implying what she thought she was?
Emmit had a taste of what the whole thing was about and what the woman was trying to say. But he didn’t want to believe she was judging him because of his skin color. How could somebody think he’s a second-class citizen in this day and age? He couldn’t trust it. He wouldn’t, however, make any precipitous assumptions or conclusions. He was starting to second-guess himself. That woman may not have meant it that way. But the more he thought, the more incredulous he became.
He gently explained that he had been waiting in line first of all and he was not going to move. She would have to wait like everybody else. Perhaps she had simply been under the stress of flying? Looking at the rude woman’s clothes, she also didn’t look like she was especially well-dressed. He didn’t want to reach that conclusion, but he wasn’t able to avoid it. After his reply, this is what got the entire room to clap for him.
Who Do You Think You Are?
It was actually because of his enormous stature that, in the first place, he even booked a first-class ticket. Emmit turned to the woman again and said, “Nope, too big to be in anybody’s military.” The seat would have provided him with space to comfortably travel. He knew that it would not be sufficient to put the woman in her place before the retort left his mouth, with his thoughts racing. Who was she to challenge his right to be there?
Elephant In The Room
In any event, military servicemen and women do not get free first-class tickets. Why did this woman attempt to rationalize how an African-American man could afford such a thing? Why was it her business, anyway? By this point, people were beginning to gather around bystanders. Some were trying to see what the commotion was about, while the others wanted a piece of the action. Emmit would not have disappointed them. Something inside him just snapped.
In Her Place
Emmit turned back to the entitled woman, and all the room clapped at the next thing he said. The woman needed to be taken down a notch, and he would be the one to do it. Even though Emmit was not aggressive by nature, he had to stand up for himself. He shot a remark at the woman, and she looked like she had been struck in the face by his words. Her eyes grew wide with disbelief as she recoiled.
Calling Her Out
Emmit told the woman no; he wasn’t in the military. An African-American with money was what he was. Only a slur that would drive the point home contained the words he had chosen. The crowd cheered and applauded, delighted with the response of Emmit, and loved the reaction of the woman. But the story was still not over.
Taking A Stand
Emmit took a firm stand right in front of everyone against intolerance. The woman deserved it. He even continued to share the story on Facebook, expecting no one else but his friends to see it. Little did he know that the situation was about to be turned upside down. He would soon have to retract what he was saying.
Within two days, Emmit’s post had been shared more than 250,000 times. At this point, over 300,000 individuals shared it. Hundreds of comments came pouring in, praising Emmit’s response to the woman’s rude behavior. One commenter wrote, “Never judge a book by its cover.” “She is so ignorant it makes no sense that people like her still exist. Enjoy yourself; you handled it well.” But soon enough, Emmit would regret it all.
When Emmit got to his destination, the post had already gone viral. The number of times it was shared and the number of people who commented on it could not believe it. So many individuals from all over the world have commended his actions. Emmit was dismayed, however, instead of being thrilled about the advertising.
For the wrong reasons, his post suddenly went viral. He later wrote, “This racist stuff is definitely an issue, but this is not the solution to that issue.” While on his flight, he had plenty of time to think about what happened. He knew that he had something to do about it.
He wrote, “It brings me no joy waking up in paradise.” He discovered why, on his 37th birthday, the day he was supposed to celebrate, another person went through “hell” There were people there who claimed his original post was fake. It was high time these individuals, too, were addressed.
The High Road
“The story was definitely real, just like this issue is definitely real, but I now know that I myself should have handled it another way, or left it how it was, and not shared it publicly.” Instead of discouraging intolerance in the world, everything his post did highlight it. It was time to be the bigger person in this case.
Right And Wrong
Emmit went to Instagram and wrote, “When dealing with people, I always try to stay on the side of Right, so to make sure I never do anybody wrong, I always try to put myself in that person’s shoes, and ask how would I feel if that person did this to me,” continuing, “And if I were her this morning I would be a total wreck today, and that doesn’t help this situation, or her… it only makes them angrier, and brings more drama…” He decided to make things right.
He wrote in all caps, “SO I WOULD LIKE TO APOLOGIZE AGAIN TO THE WOMAN I HAD THIS ENCOUNTER WITH YESTERDAY. NO MATTER HOW WRONG YOUR ACTIONS YOU DON’T DESERVE THIS,” continuing, “I BELIEVE IF YOU CAN’T HELP NOBODY AT THE VERY LEAST YOU SHOULD NEVER DO ANYTHING TO HURT THEM.” The woman had not, unfortunately, accepted his apology. If Emmit had the opportunity that day to do it again, though, he would choose to be a force for good, even if the woman didn’t really deserve it.
