Witnessing an animal in distress is not the most pleasant thing to witness. Rescuers may have several challenges they need to consider to overcome a rescue operation, but they know that all their efforts are worth it. Hope for Paws, an animal rescue organization, is committed to help and rehabilitate strays. That’s why when they got a call about a German Shepherd mix, they drove to the site right away.

It Was Cowering Beneath a Car

They received the call about an animal in distress one rainy morning. The caller suspected that it was a stray breed, which she thought was a German Shepherd mix. She said the dog was avoiding any human contact and all alone underneath a car.

Try To Lure The Dog Out

Eldad Hagar, the founder of the Hope for Paws organization, and Loreta Frankonyte were the two rescuers assigned to the uninhabited site. Their organization’s objective is to rescue every stray animal in their city. They want to be able to help and rehabilitate every animal in need. Before going to the location, they agreed to get a cheeseburger first.

Avoiding Contact With Humans

They received a call notice about a stray dog hiding under an abandoned van. It seems to be hiding away from humans. The dog was evidently scared and terrified to come out of there. Loreta attempted to cautiously walk closer so that the dog can see the food she brought.

Proceed With Caution

Loreta slowly walked towards the dog because the last thing she wanted to do is to frighten it. She was just making sure that the dog will not run away from them. They were committed to helping this dog while remaining unoffensive so the dog will not feel threatened.

No, Thank You

As Loreta got closer, the large-sized dog let out a distressing cry that sounded similar to a human crying in pain. It was crystal clear how scared the dog was. It was even shaking! The rescuers assumed it had been homeless since he was born; hence, it was terrified of humans.

Never Heard Something Like It

In the video the organization uploaded to YouTube, they say, “At first we thought she was hurt but she cried because she was so scared.” As if that wasn’t proof enough of the unique cry, the title of the video is ‘Homeless German Shepherd cries like a human! I have never heard anything like this!!!’.

Slowly But Surely

Loreta offered the delicious cheeseburger on hand, but the dog just stared at her, not acknowledging the food provided. After waiting for a long while, the dog started to be calmer, and the cries they heard were lesser. Eventually, the rescuers gained a little of its trust as it went for the cheeseburger. However, Loreta was still worried.

Mystery Dog

No one knew where the dog has originated. The two rescuers have assumptions, but overall, they are not sure about its background, so they are not guaranteed how it will react out of fear. Would the dog become aggressive and attack them? As much as they wanted to help, Loreta’s top priority is their safety.

Taking Baby Steps

To avoid startling a scared dog like this one, the rescuer must have the patience to move cautiously and slowly. It’s crucial, mainly because this is a large dog. They did not forget that it can still react out of fear and attack them.

Capturing

The rescuers needed to come up with an efficient solution while securing their safety as well. Animal rescue organizations have used tools to make rescuing animals much more manageable. This tool is basically a long rope and an adjustable loop at its end; this is what they put around the dog’s neck.

Attack Mode

In dog instinct, it’s natural to react aggressively or even attack whenever humans get too close, and they felt insecure or threatened. Stray dogs mostly do this to protect themselves from danger. They are wired to do this because of their animal instinct.

Bribery

Good thing Loreta did not come to the site unprepared. She brought a cheeseburger to lure the dog out, just like how a fisherman would use bait to attract a fish. But the question is, will this plan work with this dog?

Not Interested In Her Cheeseburger

Loreta waited was puzzled about what happened next. She has offered a delicious cheeseburger to the dog and waited for a few minutes. She was perplexed because the dog decided to turn its back on the cheeseburger and remained concealed underneath the van. In normal circumstances, an animal would choose hunger over its fear.

Scared & Wary

This dog must be so terrified! Because of fear, the dog was willing to ignore and put hunger aside just to remain in the distance with a human. This reaction surprised Loreta. The stray dog refused the cheeseburger. If it was us, we would have gone for the tasty food straight away!

Much Longer Than They Expected

This rescue would have been much less complicated if the dog was optimistic and less afraid. Despite the challenges, Eldad and Loreta were committed to succeed and win her trust slowly. Forcefully taking the dog out of the van was out of the option.

Trying To Help

But Loreta tried to use the tool she brought with him and gently placed the lasso around to stray dog’s neck. Unfortunately, the dog cried, so after seeing its response, she quickly hid the tool away from its sight. The dog’s reaction was proof of how scared it was of anything that was coming towards it.

She Ran

Loreta did not want to worsen the dog’s fear and make the situation worse than it already is. Once the lasso was completely hidden from the dog’s sight, the dog decided to flee from them! Loreta had to quickly think of a new strategy if they wanted to make this rescue mission a success.

Looking For A Safe Spot

The stray German Shepherd mix might have thought it as safer between the two buildings; that’s why she hid there. The rescuers caught up with her. Upon seeing her situation, Eldad reacted straight away by guarding the narrow opening of where the dog was hiding.

Sooner or later, the stray would still need to come out of this spot. By the time it happens, Eldad and Loreta would be waiting in each opposite direction to take her to the rescue shelter. It may be guaranteed, but how long would it take? They weren’t sure, so they cleared up all their afternoon appointments to make time for this dog.

While waiting, Eldad was guarding one of the exits, and Loreta was waiting on the opposite side. They recorded the whole process of the rescue mission on their smartphones. You can hear them talking sweetly to the dog. They were determined to make this rescue mission a success.

Getting Calm

Out of a sudden, they saw the dog’s ears down. This implies that it is scared of what’s currently going on. Eldad and Loreta gave the dog some time to calm down and recover from the fear it felt when the lasso touched its neck. After a while, they look less scared.

The stray has relaxed and calmed down. Meanwhile, Loreta tried to put the lasso again, more gently this time, and she succeeded. Anxiety was still apparent in the dog’s behavior, but Loreta is happy that they will take it out of that spot. The next thing they will do is take the dog to the vet.

The two rescuers started to slowly coax the dog to slowly come out of the spot. They were conscious of their body language because they did not want to scare the dog again. The stray dog started to walk with them slowly. Eldad and Loreta we patient, though. They gave room for the dog to move at its own pace.

Encouraging Her

While trying to lure it out, they did not stop reassuring the dog to keep it calm. The two rescuers used a sweet tone, some encouraging words, and praises. They were aware of how stray dogs are insecure and very delicate, and easily scared because of the trauma.

Coaxing Her Out Of There

Since it was raining the day they found the German Shepherd mix, they decided to call the stray dog Rain. While they were coaxing and soothing her, she just kept her tail tucked between her legs, a clear indication of its anxiety and insecurity. At the very least, they were making significant progress.

Finally, they got the stray dog out of the narrow spot. However, it was still scared, and you can see it in its demeanor. Her tail was still stuck under her legs. You can still hear her wimping and crying. From time to time, she would still tremble.

Finally Making Progress

Because the dog’s fear was still evident, Eldad decided to put another soft leash around its neck. Then the two rescuers kept praising her for allowing them to put on the leash and reassure her that she was safe. Rain also let them pet her. Surprisingly, she allowed them to take her to the cage they have brought.

Even though they are making steady progress, they were still moving at a slow pace because Rain seemed to look like she was still not settled. Whenever Loreta and Eldad thought she has calmed down, she would suddenly yelp and cry in fear, then she would try to flee.

At long last, Rain gave full permission to the two rescuers to pet her. This is significant progress, considering Rain would not even let them near her at first. Rain also allowed the two to bring her to their car.

Seeing A Friendly Face

The person who first called Hope for paws concerning the poor stray dog was Carey Linnell. She got there waiting beside the cage to hold it open. As Rain saw her, she did not go inside the cage right away. Instead, she went to Carey’s arms and tried to cuddle up with her! Amazing, right?

Apparently, the stray dog was scared, but it was used to Carey’s company since she quickly trusted her. Straight away, she allowed Carey to pet her, and they did not hear a single cry. After she found safety in Carey’s arms, she went inside the cage of her own will.

Help However They Could

It seemed to us that the poor stray dog was thankful to Carey. It was a sight to behold, and the moment was so precious to everyone. Carey, Loreta, and Eldad never lost their motivation the whole time they had been staying beside the dog and waiting for it to trust them. They took it to heart to save Rain.

They Couldn’t Believe It

Rain might have needed the assurance from Carey that everything would be fine and that she is safe. Then she went inside the cage without anyone commanding her. Everyone could not believe what she was willing to do of her own will! They have made tremendous progress!

Getting In The Cage

Each one of the rescuers was astonished that she went straight inside the cage willingly. It seems that the stray dog was more comfortable and safe in specific small spaces. No one knew what she was thinking. However, what matters most is that she’s calmer now, and they can see it in her actions.

Checking It Out

They prepared some soft and comfortable pillows inside the cage, probably why Rain decided to come inside or was it because of meeting Carey again? Whatever the reason is, Eldad and Loreta were happy she did. Rain was starting to get familiar with the cage, too. She began to sniff around while looking back at the rescuers from time to time.

Calm

It’s very clear how relaxed and peaceful Rain was once she was totally inside. She also looked pleased. It also avoided the sounds of her distress and wimping. In only a few nerve-racking hours, Loreta could not believe what had taken place.

Almost Happy

Rain had even begun to smile at this point and wag her tail just a little bit. She can understand now that the two emergency workers came to help her, not to injure her. Despite this, Eldad and Loreta continue to wonder what should have been done in their history, leading them to be very wary of people.

Curious

Rain looked curious after they were finished bringing the cage inside the vehicle. She was sniffing around and watching. Anything about her was examined by her. But what’s significant is that she seemed more relaxed. She undoubtedly understands that being inside the cage means protection right now.

Rain Got A Burger And A Bath

Lastly, she got to eat the rest of her delicious cheeseburger inside her cage and even wagged her tail a little more in response! Now she was well, and she was pleased to go to the vet. She’d get some TLC, enjoy her doggie spa day, and get more than enough cuddles from Loreta.

Rain was prepared for her life’s new chapter after getting pampered and tested. Rain deserves a chance to live with a family in a warm, loving home that will take care of her and keep her safe, just like every other pet.

She Enjoyed The Attention

Earlier that day, Rain was a terrified puppy, but it was almost as if she had turned her into a whole new dog after having a bath and cuddles. She must have known that she was not going to be hurt in any way by these people.

Re-Learning The Ropes

It was now evident that even though she did not have a chip, this dog had once been a pet. It showed Loreta that the dog had once known what it was like to live and be with a family in a house. But in what kind of home did she stay?

Rain was re-adjusting to how it was before someone had to take care of her it was pretty clear. The rescuers doubted, after all that, just hours after meeting Lorta and Eldad, she would be so relaxed and confident.

All Rain chose to do was cuddle up and chill with Loreta until she was showered and cleaned all over. Suddenly, she was behaving like a wholly new dog. In the hours she’s been at the vet, Rain has become a cute and huggable puppy.
