Animal lovers tend to immediately fall in love with any kind of furry creature that they meet, but it’s no secret that a dog is man’s best friend. The furry animals are smart, loyal, and capable of forming close bonds with their owners. But what happens when you bring home a puppy who turns out to be nothing like what you thought you were getting yourself into? This story is so incredible that it even caught attention from National Geographic. What happened, though?
The Perfect Time To Adopt
Su Yun, who lives in Kunming City, China with her family, is a hardworking mother who was in great need of a vacation, so she and her family made plans to go on a holiday trip. However, they didn’t expect that in addition to creating memories on the trip, they would also be welcoming a new member to their family.
An Adorable Puppy
While traveling, she and her family came across a really cute puppy for sale. They all fell in love with the adorable pup and its big brown eyes, and since the kids been begging for a puppy for a long time, Su thought it was the perfect time to adopt. The seller told them it was a Tibetan Mastiff, which is a large breed of dog, though the family might not have paid attention as they were too busy with their little fur ball.
Welcoming Their New Dog
When Su and her family got home from their vacation, they were very happy that they brought with them a new addition to their family. Before they even arrived at their house, they had already been thinking about possible names for their new pet, and they eventually decided on the name ‘Little Black’.
Home Sweet Home
When they arrived at their humble home, they immediately put a leash on Little Black and allowed him to become familiar with his new surroundings. The family decided to let Little Black stay inside the house instead of the backyard, and they fed him puppy chow, which he seemed to really like.
She Couldn’t Believe It
She thought Little Black was a Tibetan Mastiff puppy, but she noticed that her beloved pup was growing too big. In only two years, her dog already weighed 250 pounds and was nearly 3 feet tall!
Su thought that Little Black liked his new environment since her pet was healthy and his appetite was huge, eating every single bite of his food. She never wanted to say no to her adorable dog, so she fed him whenever she thought he was hungry.
They Meant Well
The family wanted Little Black to grow up healthy and strong, so they fed him noodles every day, two buckets of them! Though it isn’t quite a veterinarian recommended diet, the family didn’t know and only had the best intentions.
He Loved Noodles
Little Black was growing well and gaining weight really quickly, and seeing their dog thrive made the family happy. They continued feeding Little Black as much as he would like to eat, looking forward to seeing him fully matured.
She Wanted Him To Be Happy
The family was happy that their pet was getting bigger every day, but they were getting a bit curious as to how things were happening so fast. At the end of the day, she was happy that her dog was healthy and growing, so she didn’t think much of it.
Suspicions About Little Black
Su told her family that she was starting to get a little bit suspicious about Little Black, but they shrugged it off thinking that he was healthy and happy, which was all that mattered. They were just so happy to have a puppy at home with them.
However, one day, while visiting the dog, Su got quite a shock from seeing Little Black standing on his two legs as though it were completely natural! Though she didn’t know a lot about dogs, she knew this was really unusual as dogs stand up for only brief periods of time.
What Was Going On?
Su wasn’t quite sure what was happening, though she knew deep down something very strange was going on. She knew she had to do something, but she wasn’t sure what she could do, so she had to think.
Getting Too Big Too Fast
Since Little Black always appeared hungry, Su always fed him and by the time he turned one year old, the family had already spent a lot of money on fruits and noodles for his peculiar diet.
She Didn’t Mind
Even though most dogs aren’t keen on fruits, or can even get sick from them, fruits were the main thing Little Black craved. Su wanted Little Black to be happy and healthy, so she fed him whatever he wanted to eat.
Scared At Home
At the age of two, Little Black had grown so big that Su couldn’t do anything if he pulled on his leash or worse, if he threatened to attack. This made her feel a bit scared of her dog. Little Black grew way beyond her family’s expectations, and it had reached a point where he could be dangerous.
Noticeable Odd Features
In addition to growing up way past her expectations, Su noticed Little Black had features which she hadn’t seen on other dogs before. She knew that Little Black was big, so it was only fitting that he has large teeth as well, but it still really bothered her.
Caught Off Guard
Su was also preoccupied by the fact that Little Black was standing with his back legs, instead of walking on all of his four paws. She was also always very scared whenever he stood up due to his size.
Frightened Of Little Black
At first, Su’s family thought it was really cool that their dog was bigger than other people’s dogs. However, whenever the family visited him in the backyard where his little house was (they started keeping Little Black there once he became too big for their house), they would see him standing up and growling, making them feel scared and confused.
Hear Him Roar
Instead of barking, Little Black would roar and growl, but Su hadn’t had a dog before, so she thought this trait might be unique to his breed. However, as time passed, she could not convince herself anymore that this was true, seeing as his facial features became more pronounced daily and the entire family started to realize their pet dog didn’t look like a dog.
After some light research, Su and her family realized their pet dog wasn’t really a dog but was actually a bear! Su felt conflicting emotions – fear for the safety of her family, grief for losing the dog that they loved, and anger at the man who lied to them when he sold them the “puppy.”
What Can She Do?
Su knew she somehow had a bond with Little Black, but she couldn’t stop thinking he might attack her or her family. Su decided to keep feeding him well as she came up with the best thing to do. Then, she soon realized she had to get in touch with the local animal rescue team seeing as they are experts who would know what to do.

Caught The Attention Of National Geographic
This wild discovery sparked great media attention and coverage, and people worldwide could not believe such a big mistake could be made. The story was so interesting, National Geographic published an article about it. They reported how the family ended up thinking they were taking home a dog when it was actually a bear and how this kind of thing occurs more often than people would think. It’s an excuse that people often use when they try to adopt an endangered animal but get caught for it.
Help From Local Authorities
Within only a few minutes of talking over the phone, the Yiliang County Forest Public Security Bureau responded and went to the home of Su Yun. After seeing that her concern was true, the local authorities did the proper procedures and took care of the bear.
She Didn’t Even Know
Su Yun told the authorities that she was scared of bears, that she was not aware Little Black wasn’t a dog, and that it was illegal to domesticate wild animals. In addition, she said she was not aware that she was violating laws when she owned Little Black.
Little Black Is A Bear
When the authorities arrived at Su Yun’s home, they immediately went to Little Black who was busy eating. All they saw was a healthy Asiatic Black Bear, and Su and her family got really shocked to finally know the kind of animal that they have been raising. The entire family was clueless all throughout the two years they were with Little Black. The story captured worldwide media attention and was featured as a top story on People Magazine, Business Insider and National Geographic, attracting a wide audience who were all intrigued by this truly unique story.
Everyone Was Finding Out

Asiatic Black Bears
An Asiatic Black Bear, known by other names like Himalayan bear, Tibetan bear, and moon bear, is typically found in some areas in Asia, including the Himalayas and several countries in Southeast Asia. Known for being massive, Asiatic Black Bears are omnivorous and have a typical black or brownish glossy coat with one unique feature – a whitish line on the chest which looks like a crescent moon, particularly when they stand. These bears are really famous in Singapore, Korea, and Japan, but especially in China. It is a common belief in these countries that the Asiatic Black Bears’ internal organs have great medicinal purposes.
How Little Black Ended Up In The Market
Asiatic Black Bears are very famous in China, so Su meeting Little Black was not really unusual. There are a lot of Chinese “bear farms” that raise this specific kind of bear since it is believed that the internal organs of these bears are very useful in traditional Asian medicine. According to an IUCN report, there are more than 17,000 bears raised in nearly 70 farms in China alone. Su thought the person whom she bought Little Black from knew what type of animal he was, and though she was really sad to let him go, she knew that raising a wild animal was illegal and that she was not capable of giving him the best care.
Sad To Say Goodbye
According to an IUCN report, there are more than 17,000 bears raised in nearly 70 farms in China alone. Su thought the person whom she bought Little Black from knew what type of animal he was, and though she was really sad to let him go, she knew that raising a wild animal was illegal and that she was not capable of giving him the best care.
A Common Bear Mistake
This bear mistake made Su a bit embarrassed. For two years, she really thought she was raising a dog and only realized the truth once Little Black had become a full-grown bear, but actually, this was not the first time it has happened.
Upon seeing Little Black, the authorities did a quick check-up and they concluded that he had grown to a meter tall and weighed around 200 kilograms. They also made sure to check Little Black for signs of illness or injury.
He Had To Go
In the end, after they saw the bear was in good condition and perfectly healthy, the animal rescue team tranquilized him so that they could move him. It was too risky if they had not done it since he was too big. They had to transport him to the Yunnan Wildlife Rescue Center as soon as possible for further examination.
Reminder To The Public
Before they transported Little Black, the forest public security team reminded Su once more about the things regarding her mistake. They really wanted to raise awareness since this kind of thing happens all too often in China.
What They Said
This was their reminder: “The forest public security reminds the public that all animals belonging to the state to protect animals, whether hunting, killing, domestication, reproduction, sale, etc., need to obtain a permit before they can be implemented. Otherwise, it is illegal and the light will be made by the wildlife protection department. Administrative punishment may be a serious crime. At the same time, there are still major security risks.”
Little Black Leaving Home
After Little Black was moved to the wildlife center, the family said that they missed him. They were scared of their own pet, but Little Black still lived with them for over two years, and no matter what kind of animal he was, the entire family still treated him as part of their family.
She Was Sad
Su said, “Although I was a little afraid of the black bear, I have raised him for two years and have feelings. I know that after the black bear, I am afraid that if I am hurt, I will raise the broth and fruit every day.”
Even if Asiatic Black Bears are common in China, it appears as if the people do not really know difference between these bears and other animals. There are “bear farms” all over the country, so it is not surprising to come across cubs everywhere, but the bad news is, these babies do really look like puppies.
It’s Happened Before
Though these bear mistakes are one of a kind, you will realize how many times it has happened over the years if you scan through the records. There are many similar stories which happened in China.
Sometime in 2015, a farmer from the province of Yunnan in China came across an abandoned little puppy in his neighborhood. He felt pity for the poor creature and thought it would be best to adopt the little one, naming him Scorpion later on.
He Was Found
Seeing that the little guy ate really well, the farmer just fed his pet until he got satisfied. When his pet grew up, the farmer realized he was raising a bear, not a dog, but he still kept him. Unfortunately, someone reported Scorpion to the local authorities and they took him away.
“Small Milk Dog”
Still in 2015, another farmer, but this time from Lijiang, also adopted a pet he found in the mountains and called him his “small milk dog.” Similar to the first stories, the man also fell for the little creature and had no idea that what he was adopting was not a dog.
It’s A Common Problem
The farmer slept at night with his new pet and shared meals with him. Then, the farmer noticed his pet did not stop growing and he later saw the growing features of his “small milk dog” becoming that of a black bear.
He Won’t Be Alone
The farmer didn’t have a choice and had to leave his pet under the local authorities’ care, along with Little Black and Scorpion. He was sad to see his beloved pet go, but he knew that it was the only choice he had. At least all three of the bears would now be together.
