The Big Bang Theory has brought us in a rollercoaster of emotions through the world of science for 11 seasons. It’s been called one of the highest-rated comedy shown on TV, and we indeed have fallen in love with the cast and their science-based humor, we even laughed and cried alongside them! Throughout its premiere, the show has received a plethora of awards, and we’re here to take a look at the different characters who molded the show for the 11 seasons and 12 years that the show ran.
John Galecki as Leonard Hofstadter
American actor, John Mark Galecki portray the character of Leonard Hofstadter. Born in 30 April 1975, Galecki’s work as an actor for the show earned him nominations for the Primetime Emmy Award and Golden Globe Awards. In the show, he is portraying Leonard Hofstadter, one of the four main characters of the series, who works as a physicist for Caltech and is the best friend and roommate of Sheldon Cooper.
Jim Parsons as Sheldon Cooper
If you’re a fan of The Big Bang Theory, then you would know Sheldon Cooper well. The show wouldn’t be complete without his crazy antics, famous lines, and well-written character. But behind that general stereotype of the eccentric genius, Jim Parsons knew at an early age that he wanted to be an actor. Apart from television, he also debuted on Broadway, which just goes to show how he loves the craft. Behind the camera, he is a loving partner to Todd Spiewak.
Wil Wheaton as Himself
Richard William Wheaton III (also known as Wil Wheaton), born on July 29, 1972, portrayed a fictional version of himself as a character in the show. In the show, he plays as the main character’s archenemy until they become friends by season five. He is also known for the role of Wesley Crusher from “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” and he is also known to host a Youtube board game show called TableTop.
Laurie Metcalf as Mary Cooper
In the show, Laurie Metcalf portrays the mother of Sheldon Cooper, named Mary Cooper, a dedicated born-again Christian who came from East Texas. Her character’s contradiction to Sheldon’s personality helped the show gain a lot of fans. Laurie has been acting for over four decades and has garnered a lot of awards Primetime EMMY Award for Supporting Character, etc. She’s also known for her work as Jackie Harris on Roseanne, which helped boost her career.
Sara Gilbert as Leslie Winkle
In the show, Sara Gilbert portrays the character of Leslie Winkle, Leonard Hofstadter’s co-worker at Caltech, working as an experimental physicist in the laboratory. In contrast to Hofstadter’s sensitive and emotional character, Leslie Winkle’s cold and sarcastic humor was a good pair with Leonard’s character and was well received by the fans. She also works as a co-host and executive producer for The Talk and has made appearances on different shows such as 24, Will & Grace.
Mayim Bialik as Amy Fowler
Born on December 12, 1975, at San Diego, California, Mayim Bialik plays the character of Amy Fowler. Much like her character in the show, Bialik has a degree in B.S. Neuroscience and also a Ph.D. in neuroscience. She plays the love interest of the main character in the show. She plays an essential part in Sheldon’s character development from being an aloof, and socially inept, into forming a love interest towards her.
Simon Helberg as Howard Wolowitz
Born on December 9, 1980, American actor, Simon Helberg plays Howard Wolowitz, an engineer and astronaut with an overbearing mother. In the show, Helberg’s character is the only one without a Ph.D., which is why also another reason why he is always left behind by the 3 of the other main cast. Simon also earned a nomination for a Golden Globe for his work at the 2016 film Florence Foster Jenkins.
Laura Spencer as Emily Sweeney
Laura Spencer plays the character of Emily Sweeney, a redhead dermatologist with an unsettling fascination for horror and gore. In the show, Laura’s character dated Raj, but the relationship was short-lived as Raj broke up with her for Claire. Besides the character of Emily, Laura is also known for her role in the show Bones in seasons 9-12. She also appeared on Heartland, Sleepy Hollow, and Edgar Allan Poe’s Murder Mystery Dinner Party.
Kunal Nayyar as Rajesh Koothrappali
The British-Indian actor Kunal Nayyar plays the character of Rajesh Koothrappali (more known as Raj). His character’s love interest in the series might be the most interesting in the series, Raj dated a lot of women and was more associated with being the third wheel to Howard and Bernadette. Kunal Nayyar also worked for American TV ads and became a published author in 2015, writing about his career. He’s also ranked as the third highest-paid TV actor.
Kevin Sussman as Stuart Bloom
Born on December 4, 1970, Kevin Sussman portrays the character of Stuart Bloom in the show, the infamous owner of The Comic Center of Pasadena. The Comic Center of Pasadena is known to be the regular set of the four main characters in the show. Kevin’s character was promoted to be a part of the regular cast in series after season six. Sussman is also known for his role of Walter from Ugly Betty.
Alessandra Torresani as Claire
Alessandra Olivia Torreson (professionally known as Alessandra Torresani) is born on May 29th of 1987. In the show, she is known as Claire, a character who dates Raj for a while, but just like Raj’s relationship with Emily, their relationship also did not go well. The actress also appeared on different shows such as Lucifer, Husbands, and CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. Her other television credits include guest appearances on Even Stevens, JAG, ER, The War at Home, Malcolm In The Middle, Arrested Development.
Aarti Mann as Priya Koothrappali
In the show, Indian-American actress Aart Majmudar (also known as Aarti Mann) plays the role of Priya Koothrappali, Raj Koothrapali’s younger sister. She unintentionally serves as the antagonist for the Penny-Leonard tandem. She is known to be the first generation of Indian Americans. She began her career as an actress in the mid-2000s and graduated with a degree in film writing and directing. She is also known to have roles for the shows Heroes, and Suits.
Sara Rue as Stephanie Barnett
Born on January 26, 1979, American actress Sara Rue is the daughter of Joan Schlackman (née Rue), a municipal employee and former actress, and Marc Schlackman, a stage manager. In the show, she portrays the character of Stephanie Barnett. A doctor and highly distinguished surgical resident who briefly dated Leonard once. Aside from her short appearance in The Big Bang Theory, Sara Rue is also known for her work as an actress for the American teenage comedy-drama series Popular, Less than Perfect, Rules of Engagement, and Bones.
Margo Harshman as Alex Jensen
In the show, Margo Harshman is known as Alex Jensen, a doctoral student from Caltech and Sheldon Cooper’s assistant. Born on March 4, 1986, Harshman started her acting career in 1997. Aside from her role in The Big Bang Theory, she also starred as Delilah Fielding from NCIS, and other shows such as Run of The House, and Center of the Universe. Her movie appearances include The Even Stevens Movie, Sorority Row, and College Road Trip.
Brian Patrick Wade as Kurt
Brian Patrick Wade’s character is named Kurt. Kurt is shown to be Penny’s macho ex-boyfriend before she got into a relationship with Leonard. Brian Patrick’s character of Kurt only made few appearances on the show (particularly the early seasons). Aside from his role as Kurt, Brian Patrick Wide is also known as Capt. Craig Schwetje from Generation Kill, as well as the character of Alpha Werewolf Ennis on the show Teen Wolf. Wade is also a physical trainer.
Charlotte Newhouse as Joy
In the show, Charlotte Newhouse is known as “Joy,” Bernadette’s friend, and served as Leonard’s double alongside Howard and Bernadette. The Leonard-Joy love interest did not last for a while and eventually fell apart. Charlotte also acted in Brainstorm as Jules Hayes, and as Professor on Community. Comedy Central picked up Newhouse’s show called “Idiot Center” in 2016. She is also a member of the Newhouse family that owns multiple publications and media outlets such as Condé Nast, Wired, Discovery Channel, and Reddit
Valerie Azlynn as Alicia
The character Alicia is undoubtedly one of the most memorable characters in the show. Portrayed by Valeri Azlynn, Alicia was the blonde aspiring actress who lives in the apartment right above Leonard, Penny, and Sheldon’s. Alicia also played as Penny’s competitor when Penny was trying hard to get the attention of the guys. Valerie also appeared on various films and TV shows with minor roles on Tropic Thunder and Sullivan & Son.
Brooke D’Orsay as Christy Vanderbel
She was born on February 17, 1982. The Canadian actress played the character of Christy Vanderbel, Penny’s hometown friend from Nebraska, which coincidentally is engaged to her cousin. In the show, she stays with Penny for one episode and later hooks up with Howard. She also acted in How I Met Your Mother as Margaret and voiced Caitlin Cooke on the Teletoon animated series 6teen. She has since then retired from acting.
Steven Yeun as Sebastian
Steven Yeun only appeared for a single episode in the show. He portrayed the character of Sebastian, which is Sheldon Cooper’s roommate before Leonard (And not a lot of people know about this). Sebastian’s character did not get along well with Sheldon in the series. Steven Yeun, however, is more known for his portrayal of the character Glen Rhee in the show The Walking Dead, in which he’s appeared as part of the main cast for seven seasons now.
Riki Lindhome as Ramona Nowitzki
Riki Lindhome is cast as Ramona Nowitzki in the show. Ramona is a massive fan of Sheldon Cooper’s work, which is why she continually stalks Sheldon while she works at Caltech. Her character helped Sheldon in his work for solving one of his Theorems. Aside from her work in The Big Bang Theory, she is also known for her work in Million Dollar Baby and The Last House on the Left.
Mark Harelik as Dr. Eric Gablehauser
Mark Harelik plays Dr. Eric Gablehauser in the show. Gabblehauser is the head of the Physics Department in Caltech, and he also briefly dated Sheldon’s mom. Aside from his role in The Big Bang Theory, Mark Harelik is a known playwright who has worked in a lot of big-time productions which include Jurassic Park III, Seinfeld, Vince Gilligan’s Breaking Bad, Prison Break, and a whole lot more of shows.
Ian Scott Rudolph as Captain Sweatpants
A lot of fans consider Ian Scott Rudolph’s role in The Big Bang Theory to be insignificant. Not much is known about his character aside from the famous sweatpants and superhero shirts. Regardless of what the people think, he is still a massive part of the show’s story. Rudolph’s acting career mostly consisted of minor roles, but his work in The Big Bang Theory was his first credited role.
Eliza Dushku as Angela Page
The American actress Eliza Patricia Dushku (more known as Eliza Dushku) portrays the role of Angela Page in the show. As Angela Page, she is an FBI agent who investigated Howard Wolowitz’s application to the Equipped Surveillance Satellite Team. Her appearance in the show added humor to the main cast. Dushku also played other roles such as the Kickass Slayer on Buffy, The Vampire Slayer to Dollhouse, and Bring it On.
Courtney Henggeler as Missy Cooper
Sheldon Cooper also has another relative in the show. Played by Courtney Henggeler, Missy Cooper is Sheldon’s fraternal sister. She is shown to be the opposite of Sheldon due to her bratty, snarky, and cheeky sense of humor, and her role in the show is a significant one. Courtney also acted on a couple of different shows, most notably being her work with Anna Faris and Allison Janney in the series Mom. She is also a New Jersey model-singer as well.
John Ross Bowie as Barry Kripke
In the show, John Ross Bowie’s work as Barry Kripke is one of the characters that we love to hate. No one will ever forget the rivalry between Cooper and Kripke in the series. Aside from acting, John Ross Bowie also works as a comedian as well as being a writer. Some of his notable works include Reno 911!, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Glee, and Good Luck Charlie. He’s also an author of the well-known cult movie Heathers.
Christine Baranski as Dr. Beverly Hofstadter
Christine Baranski plays Dr. Beverly Hofstadter, a neuroscientist, physicist, and author, known to be a narcissistic, unloving, and very analytical mother to Leonard Hofstadter. In her career, Dr. Hofstadter has achieved a lot of greatness, except for being a good parent. Christine Baranski has received a Tony Award and several other awards. She also received 15 nominations for the Emmy for her work at shows and films like The Good Wife, Addams Family Values, Cruel Intentions, Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Chicago, and more.
Carol Ann Susi as Debbie Wolowitz
We knew Carol Ann Susi in the show as Debbie Wolowitz, Howard Wolowitz’s overbearing Jewish mother, and even though we never got to see her on-screen, we loved her for her voice, mainly because of her loud New Jersey accent, which made her one of The Big Bang Theory’s beloved characters. Sadly, Carol Ann Susi passed away in 2017 at the age of 62 due to cancer. The producers of The Big Bang Theory sent a message for her after her death, which states, “Mrs. Wolowitz, every time you spoke, we laughed. You’re in our hearts forever.”
Brian George as Dr. V.M Koothrappali
The Israeli-born British-Canadian Brian George acts as Dr. V.M Koothrappali, a successful gynecologist in New Delhi India, and is Raj’s father. Although he is only seen through a laptop most of the time in the show, this further solidifies Raj’s background as a kid born from a wealthy family from India. Brian George also had a role in Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery as a United Nations secretary, and many more shows.
Casey Sander as Mike Rostenkowski
Clinton O. “Casey” Sander plays the role of Mike Rostenkowski, a retired, tough cop, and also serves as Howard’s father-in-law. In contrast to his character’s fierce personality, his character provides memorable comedic scenes that are well received by the fans. He has also worked in different TV shows such as Malcolm in the Middle, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Criminal Minds, Mad Men, Sons of Anarchy and many more shows.
Alice Amter as Mrs. Koothrappali
Born on May 11th of 1966, Alice Amter plays the character of Mrs. Koothrappali, Raj’s mother, who later divorces Dr. Koothrapalli. Aside from her role in The Big Bang Theory, she is also known as Dr. Kapoor in the show Hot Cleveland, as well as her roles on ER, Judging Amy, Presidio Med, The Good Girl, A Man Apart, and Outsourced. Despite acting as an Indian character in The Big Bang Theory, she states that she has no Indian ancestry.
Brian Thomas Smith as Zack Johnson
Brian Thomas Smith plays the role of Zack Johnson, the on-and-off boyfriend of Penny. Born in St. Louis, Missouri, Brian made a name for himself as an actor and producer. He is well known for his works in Danny Collins and The Wedding Party. Smith also appeared in over a hundred commercials, which include brands like Miller Lite, Pizza Hut, Burger King, State Farm, Lopez Tonight, Chevrolet, Carl’s Jr., Coors Light, Budweiser, Taco Bell, DirecTV, Pop Chips, Buffalo Wild Wings, Honda, Applebee’s, Dairy Queen, and Audi.
Brian Posehn as Bert Kibbler
In the show, American Actor Brian Posehn portrayed the character Bert Kibbler, a geologist who works in Caltech. His character is shown to have a romantic interest towards Amy Farah Fowler but unfortunately failed. The actor began his acting career with guest appearances and small roles in TV shows. He is also known to appear in some films, do stand-up comedy, and in 2006, the label Relapse Records released his album.
Pamela Adlon as Halley Wolowitz
The character Halley Wolowitz is known to be the daughter of Howard and Bernadette Wolowitz; despite the role being heard from the show, she has not been seen directly. Pamela Adlon voices the character in December of 2016. Aside from her work in The Big Bang Theory, Pamela Adlon also voiced Bobby Hill on King of the Hill and Ashley Spinelli from Recess. Pamela also appeared in Grease 2, Californication, Louie, and Better Things for her on-screen roles.
Bill Nye as Himself
William Sanford Nye (More known as “Bill Nye the Science Guy”) guest-starred in The Big Bang Theory episode named “The Proton Displacement” in 2013. Bill Nye is famous for being the host of the PBS show “Bill Nye The Science Guy” the program became a hit among kids and adults, was critically acclaimed and was nominated for 23 Emmy Awards, winning 19, including Outstanding Performer in Children’s Programming for Nye himself.
Carrie Fisher as Herself
Carrie Fisher guest-starred in season 7, episode 14 of The Big Bang Theory named “The Convention Conundrum” on January 30, 2014. The same chapter also stars fellow famous Star Wars actor James Earl Jones. Carrie Fisher became famous for her role as Princess Leia in the original Star Wars films. She died on December 27th of 2016 due to Cardiac death arrest, with the contributing factors being sleep apnea and atherosclerosis.
James Earl Jones as Himself
Just like the episode as mentioned earlier called “The Convention Conundrum,” James Earl Jones also guest-starred in the same episode as Carrie Fisher. The American actor’s career spans more than seven decades, and he has been described as “one of America’s most distinguished and versatile” actors known for his performance in the film, theater, and television, and “one of the greatest actors in American history.” He is most famous for voicing Darth Vader in the Star Wars Franchise.
George Takei as Himself
More known as Hikaru Sulu of Star Trek, the famous George Takei made an appearance on the show as himself, particularly in the episode named “Hot Troll Deviation” in Season 4. He also a Facebook page that amassed over 10 million followers since he joined in 2011. Takei is a proponent of LGBT rights and is active in state and local politics. He has won several awards and accolades in his work on human rights and the Japan-United States relations, including his work with the Japanese American National Museum.
Yeardley Smith as Sandy
The French-born actress made an appearance on the show in 2010 as Yeardley Smith. In the episode “Einstein Approximation,” It shows Sheldon working at a Cheesecake Factory with Penny. Yeardley Smith is more known for her work in The Simpsons as the long-running character named Lisa Simpson. She also works as a comedian and a writer. Also taught herself to paint by copying other artists. She released a children’s book titled I, Lorelei in 2009, and her story “The Race” was included in the book Just Humor Me.
Octavia Spencer as Octavia
In the show, Octavia Spencer acts as “Octavia,” a Department of Motor Vehicle employee, and we believe that she is the best and most hilarious DMV employee of all time! She started doing film back in 1996, but she did not get her big breakthrough until 2011, which was through The Help. She won a lot of awards, such as Academy Award, Golden Globe, SAG, BAFTA, and Critics’ Choice Movie Award for Best Supporting Actress. Thanks to her portrayal of Minny Jackson.
Charlie Sheen as Himself
Born on September 3 of the year 1965, Carlos Irwin Estévez (famously known as Charlie Sheen) made his guest appearance in The Big Bang Theory episode from 2008 called “The Griffin Equivalency” in which he guest-starred by playing a character of himself. Charlie started his acting career in 1973 and is known to be a somewhat controversial figure due to his advocacies such as the “911 truth movement” and his belief of anti-vaccination.
Regina King as Janine Davis
Born on January 15, 1971, Regina King made a breakthrough in 1985 thanks to her role as Brenda Jenkins in the series 277, in which she was acknowledged for being a phenomenal actress. She occasionally appears in The Big Bang Theory as Janine Davis, the director of employee relations at the university. In July of 2019, it was announced that she would direct One Night in Miami based upon the play of the same name and will premiere at the 2020 Toronto International Film Festival.
Bob Newhart as Professor Proton
Bob Newhart began his acting career in Hollywood in 1958, and not long after, he made his breakthrough two years later. During the runtime of The Big Bang Theory, Bob Newhart made five guest appearances in the show as Professor Newhart, in which he received his first Primetime Emmy Award on September 15, 2013. In terms of comedy, Newhart is known for his deadpan delivery and a slight stammer that he incorporated early on into the persona around which he built a successful career.
Pasha D. Lychnikoff as Dimitri
Born on 16th February 1967, Lychnikoff moved to the United States during the 1990s. Ever since his subsequent move to Los Angeles, he has appeared in many TV movies and series and feature films such as HBO’s Deadwood series the movie Trade. He appears in The Big Bang Theory as Dimitri Rezinov, Howard Wollowitz’s cosmonaut companion. He is also a voice and theater actor. You might even recognize him as Yvon from Shameless.
Summer Glau as Herself
The American actress born on July 24, 1981, named Summer Glau, made a guest appearance in The Big Bang Theory as herself in the episode “The Terminator Decoupling” from season 2. She is best known for her roles in science fiction and fantasy television series; as River Tam in Firefly, and its continuation film Serenity, as Tess Doerner in The 4400, as Cameron in Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, as Bennett Halverson in Dollhouse, as Skylar Adams in Alphas and as Isabel Rochev/Ravager in Arrow.
Judy Greer as Dr. Elizabeth Plimpton
Judy Greer plays the role of Dr. Elizabeth Plimpton, an attractive cosmological physicist and sex enthusiast from Princeton University. She is under consideration for a position at the California Institute of Technology and comes to Pasadena as a friend and personal guest of Sheldon Cooper. Judy is best known for the character in Arrested Development as Kitty Sanchez, as well as Fatty Magoo from It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia. She has also written a book in 2014 entitled “I Don’t Know What You Know From Me.”
Jodi Lyn O’Keefe as Mikayla “The Escort”
The American actress, model, and fashion designer, Jodi Lyn O’Keefe, plays the role of “Mikayla, the prostitute” in The Big Bang Theory. She is best known for her role as Cassidy Bridges on the TV show named Nash Bridges, which aired from 1996 to 2001. She is also known for playing Gretchen Morgan on the show Prison Break, as well as playing the character named Jo Laughlin on The Vampire Diaries
April Bowlby as Rebecca
April Bowlby played the character of Rebecca in The Big Bang Theory, in the show, her role is a failed actress who turns into a personal training which happened to be dating Bert, a Caltech employee. Aside from being known for her role in The Big Bang Theory, she is also known for acting in different shows such as Two and a Half Men, Drop Dead Diva, From Prada to Nada, Married by Christmas, and A Mother’s Crime.
Analeigh Tipton as Herself
Analeigh Christian Tipton is an American actress and fashion model. She is known for placing third on Cycle 11 of America’s Next Top Model and for her roles in the films “Crazy, Stupid, Love,” Warm Bodies, and Two Night Stand. In The Big Bang Theory, she has appeared on two episodes, “The Panty Piñata Polarization,” where she meets Howard and Raj at the house used in “America’s Top Model.” And “The Mystery Date Observation” as Sheldon’s potential date.
Katee Sackhoff as Herself
Kathryn Ann Sackhoff (Famously known as Katee Sackhoff) is an American actress known for playing Lieutenant Kara “Starbuck” Thrace on the Sci-Fi Channel’s television program Battlestar Galactica, in which she was nominated for four Saturn Awards. In The Big Bang Theory, she appears as Howard Wolowitz’s dream girl. She appears in Howard’s masturbatory fantasies in which both attempts of masturbation failing, thanks to Mrs. Wolowitz and Katee walking away with George Takei.
