Good At What He Does

Troy Aikman has earned a reputation for being a jack-of-all-trades in the world of football. He spent 12 years as the QB for the Cowboys and then 16 more years as a sports commentator. Without a single doubt, he really has come a long way. As a matter of fact, he has been interested in coaching as well. He might have won a lot of awards and trophies in the past, but one achievement stands out for him. Can you guess which one we are talking about here?

Football Was His Forte

Ever since Troy Aikman kicked off his career in the National Football League, he has been quite the star. He tried a number of sports from basketball to baseball when he was a child, but football had a special place in his heart. During the 1989 draft, he was the first overall pick! That was also the first season in which he became a starting quarterback in the NFL. Before that, he was a notable player for the UCLA Bruins. In the following decade, he would kill it on the field and lead the Dallas Cowboys to Super Bowl victory a total of three times. However, this does not cover all of his achievements just yet.

Retiring From Playing

After spending over a decade playing professional football in the NFL, he decided that it was time to go in a different direction. By 2000, his entire life was going to change since it was his final season with the Cowboys and in the league. When the season came to a close, he got married to Rhonda Worthey, the publicist of the team. The happy couple did not waste any time waiting to begin their own family. Aikman and Worthey welcomed a little girl by the name of Jordan Ashley Aikman about a year later.

After their first child together, they also had another lovely little girl called Alexa Marie Aikman one year after that. Aikman went from cradling a football in his arms to cradling these baby girls. He had no idea that it was possible to adore anyone as much as he adored his children. This was the reason that he worked hard to separate his personal life from his work life. He ensured that they can have lots of family time. Sadly, the family had to go through a huge change about a decade after this happened.

Soldiering On Through Injuries

Before we talk about the 2010s, it would be wise to look at his early years. As the new millennium was starting, Aikman was able to cement his name in sports history and got ready for his induction into the Hall of Fame during the late ‘00s. There were some people who assumed that his pro career was done in the early ‘90s thanks to serious medical problems. There were moments when he got benched due to injuries, but they were wrong anyway. They must have known that this was the case when he helped restore the Dallas Cowboys Dynasty by bringing home the Superbowl ring in 1993, 1994, and 1996!

A ‘90s Inspiration

It was not only his talent on the court that made Troy Aikman the 1993 Superbowl MVP, 1997 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year, GQ’s God’s Quarterback, and a Dallas Cowboys Ring of Honor awardee. He also deserved these titles because of his passion and resilience and his rough and tough gameplay. On top of that, he also had to overcome many medical issues in the past and knew how to keep a good balance between media coverage and his personal life.

God’s Quarterback

When you are a pro athlete, you will be aware that injuries are a major occupational hazard. Aikman has definitely undergone his fair share of those. In 1993, GQ dubbed the 27-year-old football player “God’s Quarterback” and made him the cover of that issue. However, there was more happening behind the scenes than one might think. “When we were doing the shoot, I couldn’t move… I was in back spasms. They propped me up against the wall,” Aikman told GQ years after it happened. The football icon also had to deal with a major back injury and managed to work through treatment and keep playing.

What He Believes In

Apart from his major back injury in ’93, Aikman also had to suffer more injuries over the course of his career. He dealt with concussions and knee injuries as well. When he decided to quit football in 2001, a lot of people assumed that these medical issues were the problem. However, he is not someone who will shy away from a certain thing because of some pain. As a matter of fact, he is someone who will stand up courageously for his beliefs and act accordingly when something needs to be done. What could be the reason that a man like this has chosen to retire?

A Lucky Cowboy

In 2016, Aikman told Dallas News that his decision to retire had “absolutely nothing to do” with the injuries or concussions he suffered. As a matter of fact, he informed GQ, “It’s a brutal game. I consider myself to be one of the really, really fortunate ones, to have gotten out of the game as healthy as I did.” Even though football is a young man’s game, the 35-year-old player was wise enough to know when it was the right time for him to quit.

The Real Reason

During his 2016 interview with the Dallas News, Aikman expounded on his reasons: “Ultimately, the reason I retired after 12 years was because I felt that I had worked hard to develop some level of credibility and respect within this game. And I felt like that was being jeopardized by decisions that were being made beyond my control within the organization.” Decades of experience on the field made Aikman realize how he “didn’t want to be a part of it anymore.”

The Real Reason

The Real Reason

His Proudest Achievement

To this day, Aikman is thought to be one of the greatest football players in history. At the very least, he is definitely a legend in the Cowboys. However, he brought so much more to the table than mere points and throws. He was always an excellent team player, both on and off the field. “When I look back on my athletic career, I know the fans want to talk about the Super Bowls. And I’m proud of those. There’s no question those are meaningful things,” he told Dallas News, “But what I’m most proud of is the friendships that I have to this day.” However, it would not be until a couple of years later that he started to realize that there is something else that he could be even prouder about.

Coming Back

In 2004, this 6-time Pro Bowl champion thought about coming out of retirement to play for the Miami Dolphins. It turns out that he was not on the same page about the way the Dallas Cowboys was being run. However, he did like how the Dolphins had been working. Even though he started to train and get ready to join the team, life does not always work out as planned. In the end, the Dolphins did not sign him on. Despite this, his retirement appeared to have happened at the best possible time. This devoted and compassionate man now had more time to focus on his new family and dote on his little girls!

Taking Pride

It is easy to assume that football would be his pride and joy, but there was something he always wanted even more than a pro career. “As far back as I can remember I’ve always wanted to be a dad,” he admitted to Dallas News. It is not only something that he enjoys more than anything else, but he also found out just how incredibly hard it is to be a parent. He said, “It’s tougher than any blindside blitz or anything you see on a football field.” Safe to say, he is extremely proud of his daughters! Even if this was the case, he does not want to put an end to his career and passions just yet.

Not Stopping

Even though Troy Aikman and Rhonda Worthey had a family to raise together after his retirement in 2001, he did not stop working altogether. As a matter of fact, he did not stop when he was still on top! This athlete entered a whole new direction by keeping the train going when he became an NFL analyst for FOX’s “A-Team.” He was able to show that he was as ambitious he was off the field as he was when he was in the NFL. It did not take long before he established himself as a great sports commentator.

His Awesome Analyses

You might be good on the field, but this does not necessarily mean that you would be good in front of the camera. However, Aikman was able to use his personality, knowledge, and passion in the new career that he just started. The official Fox Sports website said that he was “gifted at succinctly illustrating and explaining on-field action, Aikman’s analysis offers insight into the nuance and skill associated with playing in today’s NFL.” Even though things were going well for Aikman in terms of his career, his personal life was not going through the same trajectory.

His Work-Life Balance

One of the most incredible things about Aikman is that he seems to know how to balance his work life and his personal life. He likes to post and share photos of the family, but he still prefers to keep things low-key when it comes to his private affairs. This is the reason that many fans were in total shock when they heard that Rhonda Worthey and Troy Aikman split up in 2011. The couple tried hard to keep things away from the limelight, but there were rumors that the separation was not a light decision at all.

Time To Separate

It makes a lot of sense for a couple who has children and spent a decade together to put a lot of thought into such a decision. At any rate, it seems like these two knew that it was important for them to be the best possible parents to their daughters. Regardless of how things ended between them, they planned to co-parent the girls together. On top of that, they wanted things to be private out of respect for all the parties involved. We are sure that it must have been challenging for Aikman to become a single parent all of a sudden. Despite this, the new development opened up a new world for him.

His Childhood

As soon as you become a mom or dad, it is only inevitable for you to think about your own parents and your childhood. Aikman has said that his dad was a big figure in his life and helped mold him into the person and sportsman he now is. “I don’t even know if [my father] knows that there’s a part of me that wanted to prove that I was as tough as he was. But it certainly helped me in my athletic career,” he told GQ. His love of sports ran in the blood since both sides of his family were into sports. But did he want to follow suit and raise his daughters in the same way that his dad raised him?

Just Dad

It turns out that his father had an obsession with football and encouraged Aikman to take the sport seriously. “He loved football. He didn’t make a lot of baseball and basketball games. But he didn’t miss many football games.” But did this mean that he wanted his daughters to grow up in the same way? He gave it a lot of thought but realized that he was not interested in being a coach to them. He clarified, “I just want to be Dad.”

Not Coach

When you are a single parent, the good cop and bad cop roles begin to get quite slippery. Many parents prefer to shy away from this route. At the end of the day, Troy Aikman only wanted to be a dad to his girls. He did not want to risk his relationship with them by training them in football like his own father did to him. “I knew my girls would see me in an entirely different light and I just didn’t want that,” he told GQ. As a matter of fact, he did not only feel this. He knew that this would, for certain, be the case.

Assistant Coach

When his daughters Jordan and Alexa were about six years old, Aikman decided that it was time to be more involved in their lives. He wanted to be more than just their father and tried his hand at training them in sports. He himself started out when he was very young. “I coached the girls as an assistant coach in a couple of sports, and I was way too competitive for that,” he told GQ. This was the reason that he decided that it was better for him to cheer them on from the bleachers instead of coaching them from the sidelines. He did not have any problems with that either!

His Greatest Success

The talented football player and TV personality is mindful about separating his personal life and work life, but he does like to rave about how amazing his daughters are. As we have previously said, his main goal is to be the best dad he can possibly be. He told Dallas News, “Whether someone knows me as a Hall of Fame quarterback, a broadcaster. If when they are older, if they look back, and they say he was a great dad then I will have been successful.” Even if he was a great dad, there was no way for Aikman to have predicted what was going to take place in his life after that.

One Special Day

All relationships are different, and every person needs a different amount of time to heal after going through a breakup. We have already mentioned it many times, but Aikman was great at keeping his personal affairs on the down-low. In 2016, Aikman began to post photos with a woman who was important to him. We are talking about Catherine “Capa” Mooty, who he soon revealed was his new significant other! Around a year later, Aikman uploaded a lovely photo of them at Loke Como, Italy. The caption read, “June 2, 2017 – A special day as I proposed to the love of my life.” How sweet is that?!

His Hilltop Home

Troy Aikman and his house made headlines in 2015. That was the time he planned to put his huge Texas mansion on the market. In 2018, the Dallas News reported that he was constructing a “hilltop home” at Highland Park that had gorgeous views of Turtle Creek for his family to enjoy. He took to Instagram to post a photo of his lovely home and the vistas of the creek from the living area. He tagged Joe Buck, one of his best buds, and captioned it, “Ready for Game 4 and best in the business.”

A Lovely Romance

In 2017, the superstar was finally able to say goodbye to his single dad status. The Aikman family was about to go through a drastic change as well. Country Living said that when they first met each other, Mooty was a single mother living in the Dallas area running a luxury mobile fashion store called Luxeliner. Even though she and Aikman fell in love and enjoyed an intimate wedding that year, there was something about the romance that made it stand out from all the others. Based on their social media posts, Troy Aikman and Capa Mooty started their love story in 2016. However, it is interesting to note what he told Sports Illustrated all the way back in 2015.

When he was interviewed by Dallas News in 2016, he explained, “I’ve got two awesome girls. They have meant everything to me.” Any parent that shares this sentiment will know that it will make all the difference if you find a partner who understands and accepts the situation wholeheartedly. This was what made the two of them perfect for one another. Mooty herself has two sons from a previous marriage! It is not always easy to integrate two families into one, so let us hear how things have been working out for this new family.

“I Don’t Have A 10-Year-Old Son”

In 2015, Aikman had yet to marry Mooty. He was interviewed by Sports Illustrated and asked about his thoughts on safety and young football players. “I don’t have a 10-year-old son… If I did, I would not tell him he could not play football. But I don’t think I would encourage him to play football,” he answered. He had no idea that he was going to gain sons a few years after that! However, there are other things that might come as a surprise about this new family.

Mooty and Aikman’s family has been described by the press as a real-life version of the Brady Bunch. This might be because everyone is getting along better than one might think. The integration went very well, based on their family road trips and nights out together. Isn’t that amazing? Aikman has also referred to their family as “teamsix” on social media. Aikman does not only make posts about how amazing his daughters are, but he also does this with his stepsons! We daresay that this makes the most recent developments in his career even more surprising. Are you ready to hear what we mean by that?

Youth Coaching

Even though Aikman did not seem too interested in coaching and training his daughters when they were little, he has expressed his interest in coaching young athletes. “I’d reached out to different programs, including [Episcopal School of Dallas] where my kids go… But then I looked at my schedule with broadcasting, and it just hasn’t been easy to do,” he told Dallas News. However, when a coach at Episcopal School of Dallas asked one of Mooty’s kids if his stepdad would be interested in working with them part-time, the boy told him about it right away! But what did Aikman do about it?

Youth Coaching

For A Reason

If there is a story that will help you believe that everything happens for a reason, this story might do it for you. For many years, Troy Aikman had been interested in going into the field of youth coaching. He did not expect or think that it would happen at the school or the team of any of his children. This was truer a few years ago since he had no one to call his son back then. He had no hesitation at all when he accepted the job offer! However, is everything as he had hoped it would be?

For A Reason

A Part-Time Position

One of the primary reasons that Aikman was unable to be a coach before was that there were not many opportunities that would accommodate his Fox Sports commentator position. This was the same reason why the part-time assistant position for Val’s team was so perfect! Aikman gets to set practices around his own schedule. On Tuesday and Wednesday, the high school team is able to enjoy training with football legend Troy Aikman. He is also there to coach them on their Friday night games.

The Best Candidate

Troy Aikman got his start as a child being trained by his father to be an NFL prodigy and made his way to a great sports analyst. He was clearly the best candidate for this position. Preston Morway, the QB of the team, told Dallas News,“It’s really cool having someone who has basically experienced everything you can in football and gone through all that.” We are sure the whole team is excited to be trained by this legend, but it looks like Aikman himself is getting more out of it than anyone else! He said, “The chance to be around those guys and their friends has been really, really enjoyable for me… I’ve gotten more out of it than these kids.”

Their Parenting Priorities

There is no doubt that some families find integration challenging, but Aikman and Mooty have sorted out how to make everything work for them. Even though Aikman has stayed outside of the spotlight for a few years, the whole family has been posting a lot of photos to show off their family dynamic. On top of that, the couple also talked about what makes their marriage work. Before anything else, it is clear that Aikman and Mooty both agree that the kids will always be their top priority. Parenting will always be a big part of their lives as well. But what is the other secret ingredient to making their family work?

Both Mooty and Aikman put in the effort to be present at the kid’s activities regardless of whether they are music recitals or sports games. On top of that, it helps that the four kids attend one school as well. However, what keeps the relationship alive and well is the fact that the couple strikes the right balance between being a couple and being parents. They always make sure that they can take time for themselves! We are not only talking about going out on dates but also seeing the world by each other’s side. Clearly, this is the very definition of relationship goals.

We all have different love languages, and it is very clear that the ones for Aikman and Mooty are very compatible. Aside from spending intimate and private time together, Aikman also makes sure to shower her with extra appreciation and attention. In June 2019, he posted a great photo of them on his Instagram profile. The caption read, “I love you. I love us. I love our family. Happy anniversary to the [love] of my life!” Despite their busy schedules, demanding careers, and parenting woes, Troy Aikman and Capa Mooty still get to go on safaris and spend time on the beaches as well. We have no doubts that this is a couple that knows how to live their lives to the fullest!
