How I Met Your Mother has earned a soft spot in so many hearts. The American sitcom ran for nine seasons, from 2005 to 2014, and fans were sad to say goodbye. Created by Carter Bays and Craig Thomas, the show follows the main character, Ted Mosby’s love life and his search for his future wife. Essentially, the show tells his love story in reverse, leading up to the point where he met the mother of his future children. Ted tells his own story to his two children through narration and we get to experience his life in Manhattan throughout the series, meeting a wide variety of characters in the process.
Alyson Hannigan (Lily Aldrin) – Then
Let’s start with one of the main characters of the show: Lily Aldrin. She’s Marshall’s fiance as well as one of Ted’s best friends. Well, she and Ted get closer thanks to her relationship with his best friend, Marshall. Lily is a kindergarten teacher as well as an amateur painter. Throughout the series, she grows into her character, learning along the way what she wants to achieve in her life and what her real goals are.
Alyson Hannigan (Lily Aldrin) – Now
Alyson Hannigan had her breakthrough role in the famous series Buffy the Vampire Slayer in the late 90s and early 2000s. After that wrapped, she moved on to star in How I Met Your Mother as Lily Aldrin. Funny enough, her husband, Alexis Denisof, had a recurring role on the show as well throughout the seasons. The couple has two daughters together: Satyana and Keeva. Nowadays, she does a lot of voice work in addition to her live-action roles.
Cobie Smulders (Robin Scherbatsky) – Then
Robin Scherbatsky is another of the main characters in the series. A close friend to Lily, Ted, and Marshall, she also becomes a love interest for Barney later in the series. The aspiring news anchor moved to New York City from her home city, Vancouver, Canada. Of course, Robin is also one of Ted’s love interests. The couple has an on-and-off relationship throughout the series. A classic “tomboy”, Robin is known to have a love for hockey, guns, and whiskey.
Cobie Smulders (Robin Scherbatsky) – Now
After gaining recognition for her role in How I Met Your Mother, Cobie went on to get the role of Maria Hill in the Marvel Cinematic Universe superhero movies. She appeared in Avengers: Age of Ultron, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, and Spider-Man: Far From Home. Outside of the MCU, she also starred in Jack Reacher: Never Go Back and The LEGO Movie 2. Additionally, she’s starred in various shows like Friends from College. She’s married to Taran Killam. They have two daughters together: Shaelyn and Janita.
Cristin Milioti (Tracy McConnell) – Then
Tracy McConnell is the long-awaited mother in the How I Met Your Mother series. Only making her first appearance in season 8, the character becomes a regular in season 9. Naturally, the whole premise behind the series is the story of how she and Ted met, so when she finally comes into play, the story unfolds from there. After suffering the loss of her boyfriend, Tracy mourns him for several years before meeting Ted. The two have crossed paths unknowingly before, as the seasons hint time and time again. Eventually, they finally meet and begin their romance.
Cristin Milioti (Tracy McConnell) – Now
It turns out that the creators of How I Met Your Mother purposely wanted a rather unknown actress to play the role of the mother. So, They took on Cristin after a great audition. However, after she appeared on the show, she went on to get even more prominent parts in movies and TV shows such as Fargo and The Mindy Project. Her most notable role after HIMYM is now her starring role in Palm Springs. The movie was purchased by Hulu at the Sundance Film Festival for a record-breaking $17.5 million.
Ashley Williams (Victoria) – Then
We get to meet Victoria in season one. The baker at The Buttercup Bakery is a love interest of Ted’s. After the two start dating, things get complicated once Victoria receives a cooking fellowship in Germany. While they try maintaining their relationship through long-distance, they ultimately break up after Ted kisses Robin. However, Victoria reappears five years later. Ted then apologizes to her but gets upset when he finds out she started dating someone almost as soon as they broke up.
Ashley Williams (Victoria) – Now
Aside from appearing on How I Met Your Mother, Ashley Williams has some very impressive roles under her belt. During her hiatus from the show, she appeared in movies like Something Borrowed. Additionally, she made her Broadway debut in 2013 in A Time To Kill. A couple of years earlier, the actress married film producer Neal Dodson. They now have two sons together: Gus and Odie.
Sarah Chalke (Stella Zinman) – Then
Stella Zinman is yet another one of Ted’s love interests. She makes her debut in season 3 and is a recurring character until season 9. The two characters met initially when Ted goes to her clinic to get a butterfly tattoo removed from his lower back. While Stella refuses to go out with Ted at first since he’s her patient and she wants to focus on her daughter, but she eventually agrees. The two get engaged after dating for a while, but ultimately don’t make it when Stella leaves Ted at the altar to reunite with her ex, Tony. He also happens to be the father of her child.

If you’ve seen Scrubs, you must have recognized Stella as soon as she appeared on-screen. Of course, her role in How I Met Your Mother only helped her progress in her career. After the show wrapped, she went on to appear on shows like Friends from College and Cougar Town. Additionally, she appeared in the iconic show, Grey’s Anatomy, in 2013. Nowadays, the actress is engaged to lawyer Jamie Afifi, with whom she shares two kids: Charles and Frances.
