I know what you’re thinking, “Popcorn is definitely NOT a healthy snack!” On the one hand you’re right, but on the other, you’re left… sorry about that, it’s the morning and I’m excited! Popcorn is a lot healthier than most people imagine, and I’m going to tell you why.
Making It Right
First things first. In order to make healthy popcorn, you first have to make sure that you’re making it correctly. Popcorn at the movies, unfortunately, is not great for your health. Heavily buttered popcorn is also not recommended, so avoid the prepackaged microwave option (sorry). You can pop a batch of your own with a couple of drops of coconut oil and you’re good to go!
It’s A Whole Grain Holy Land
Believe it or not, popcorn is the only snack, yes the only one, that’s 100% unprocessed whole grain. If that isn’t impressive then how about the fact that you can potentially hit 70% of your daily whole grain intake with just one serving!
It Helps You Go
What am I talking about exactly? Popcorn has shown signs of constipation relief. You know what they say – once you poop, you can’t stoop… I’m terribly sorry. Researchers have found that by eating popcorn regularly, a person’s fiber intake increases, aiding many who suffer from constipation.
It’s Filling, Kind Of
Popcorn is pretty easy to keep munching on ’til kingdom come, isn’t it? It makes sense since it is salty, crunchy and chewy, and light as a dewdrop on a tulip. When snacking on popcorn, your stomach sends signals to your brain telling it that you’re eating. This may reduce your appetite, as well as your desire to snack on something less healthy, like chocolate or potato chips.
It Has Polyphenols
I bet you didn’t know that! You might not even know what polyphenols are, but that’s okay, I didn’t know either. Scientists at the University of Scranton discovered that popcorn is packed with polyphenols – a compound that helps fight inflammation. How’s that for a bonus?
It’s Tasty And Versatile
Isn’t popcorn just like that one friend we all have that just ‘goes with the flow’? You can add pretty much any spice or condiment on popcorn to turn it into a completely different delight. I personally love myself a spicy mix of chili and barbecue, but you’re good to steer in any direction you want.
Popcorn For President
It might be a stretch to start campaigning for the presidency, but at least we can push for popcorn to become the snack of choice. It’s healthy, it’s tasty and it’s versatile. What else could you ask for? And if that isn’t enough for you, then just remember – if you’re looking for a cuddle buddy who doesn’t mind your chewing during a movie, popcorn’s your perfect partner.
