Statistics show that 7.5 people in the United States alone are afflicted with psoriasis and yet it is still stigmatized. Despite how shunned it is, the disease found its way way into the Kardashian family where it afflicts both Kim Kardashian and Kim Jenner. Kim is one of the true starlets of show business where she is famous simply for being herself, almost to the chagrin of the rest of the country. Despite this Kardashian has pushed on to become a household name thanks to her successful marriage to Kanye West, her own fashion line, and of course her reality television shows. In 2011 she was diagnosed with psoriasis. Like many others who suffer from psoriasis, Kim was also looking for the best sort of psoriasis medicine that there was available. Her doctor, Dr. Lancer, suggested that she slow down her lifestyle as stress seems to be one of the bigger causes of the disease in people. Kim is still going strong but she must have found some way to cut the stress out of her life as it has been awhile now since she’s been sidelined by the problem. She is easily one of the most high profile sufferers of the disease today.
Roth is known primarily for his work behind the camera as the director of the shock-horror ‘Hostel’ series. He has also done plenty of on camera work including his role in the Tarantino flick, ‘Inglourious Basterds’. Eli Roth is another big name that got hit by the genetic, non contagious skin disorder. Roth has had psoriasis his entire life and it has apparently made things quite difficult for him. One particular bout with the skin disease apparently left the man incapable of wearing clothing or leaving his home. He had to stay sidelined for awhile due to the fact. Again, Roth stresses that his treatment for psoriasis begins with keeping stress out of his life as much as possible–at least for a director. His full slate of IMDB credits would appear to show that he has his problem under control. Roth gave a candid interview where he mentioned that most Directors Guild members have an average lifespan of 57 years. Roth spoke of the stress and unhealthy lifestyle that these directors lived and how he would have to change in order to find psoriasis relief. He remarks that his disease has inspired him to work harder than ever. He cites staying healthy as one of his biggest goals, so it is no surprise that he is constantly hitting the gym.
Country music is huge in America but the lead singers in the genre, nowadays anyways, don’t always stick out. LeAnn Rimes is one of the few remaining true leading ladies of country. The woman got her start in country back in 1996 when she dropped her debut album, ‘Blue’. The record would go on to top the country charts and cause her to explode in popularity. Somewhere along the way Rimes began to deal with the fact that she had psoriasis on an almost global level. In 2008 she took time to talk about her disease via a PSA about psoriasis and then she would go on to become the spokeswoman for Sheer Cover make up. While she rose to fame as a beautiful starlet, the pressure would cause her psoriasis to break out more than ever. So Rimes took to eating right and exercising as her new psoriasis treatment. Rimes spoke candidly by saying that “psoriasis affects you both physically and emotionally.” It’s hard not to be proud of how far she has come.
There are a few faces of professional golf left in the world and Phil Mickelson is one of them. The veteran golfer made his debut way back in 1992 and since then he has been going strong. He’s won 51 professional tourneys, 42 PGA tours, and 9 Euro tours. He’s one of the most storied golfers to ever play the game. In 2010, about a month before the U.S. Open, Mickelson began to suffer paint in his joints that was severe enough to cause worry. He would later find out that he had psoriatic arthritis. Another extension of psoriasis, this joint condition is common among those already suffering from the genetic skin condition. Mickelson had been suffering from the skin version of psoriasis for about eight years at this point. Mickelson went on to aggressively treat his problem with a medicine called Enbrel, a biological drug that works in about 50% of the patients that try it. Mickelson is still going strong.
Jon Lovitz is one of ‘those guys’ that you can’t help but recognize from somewhere. He is most widely recognized for his work on Saturday Night Live as part of the ensemble cast from 1985 to about 1990. The show gave him a platform to work his way into film and television and his iconic, if nasally, voice has kept him there. Lovitz is revered for his comedy but his journey hasn’t quite been all laughs. In fact the man has been suffering from psoriasis for over a decade at this point and it didn’t take him long to want to do something about it. Lovitz is standing behind the Are You Serious? campaign which is designed to bring national awareness to those that suffer from psoriasis. Lovitz heavily emphasizes a candid conversation with your dermatologist alongside a healthier lifestyle in order to deal with all of the problems that psoriasis can incur. He also firmly believes in developing a strong networks of friends and family who can understand what you are going through so as to be able to assist you when you need them the most. This isn’t a scientific way to attack your problems, but it worked for Lovitz.
To this point we’ve mostly been looking at older celebrities in the world of entertainment, outside of Kim Kardashian. CariDee English brings perspective of psoriasis straight back to the front and center for young people. She is a 30 year old fashion model most known for winning the reality show America’s Next Top Model. The beautiful blond has quickly taken over the modeling world and now she’s extending her portfolio to include television and a burgeoning musical career. The North Dakota native is doing all of this stressful work while dealing with psoriasis. English was vocal about how her skin condition made her think she could never be a model, but she proved that doubt wrong. Now she proudly stands in commercials for Stelara, a plague treatment for psoriasis. CariDee’s results cannot be argued with and she received them while working her way up one of the most brutal industries in the world. So while there is no new cure for psoriasis as yet, her work has brought psoriasis to the forefront of the minds of many important people.
John Updike is a novelist that was born and raised in Pennsylvania. Sadly the man passed away at the age of 76 but before he went he did many great things to bring to the public forefront the plight of psoriasis. When Updike was a kid he was asked what he wanted to do with his life. He immediately ruled out anything in public, due to the fear of his psoriasis. It was this fear that led him to become a Pulitzer Prize winning author. He included many references to psoriasis in the subtext of his novels and even made public the desire for change in the treatment of psoriasis medication. As a writer he made his hay with his realist forms of prose, brought on perhaps by his own realistic world view.
Art Garfunkel is one of the fathers of folk rack. As one part of the Grammy Award winning due, Simon & Garfunkel, Art has won the world over with his smooth voice and beautiful lyrics. He’s won several Grammy Awards as well as been nominated for a Golden Globe for his work in the film Carnal Knowledge which released in 1971. Garfunkel has been suffering from the debilitating skin condition for almost as long as he has been making music, but he has found his own ways to deal with it. Garfunkel praises the salty water of the Dead Sea as a way to sooth and treat the condition. He first flew over for a trip back in 1998 and continues to do so to this day. Garfunkel is 71 years old and looking as good as ever, so we can’t argue with his results.
