When we look at all of the celebrities that fill up our magazines and television screens they all seem to have one thing in common (apologies to Steve Buscemi): they are gorgeous and perfect. From the very young to the very old, the stars of Hollywood keep themselves looking absolutely splendid. They have perfectly coiffed hair, elegant clothing, bronzed skin, and gleaming white teeth. We can understand the bronzed skin as thanks to tanning beds or sunlight. We can admire the healthy bodies that they work for in the gym. The expensive clothing explains itself. But the smiles, always the smiles, catch our eyes. We see many of these stars before they were huge and some of them have smiles to make you cringe. So in that spirit we decided to look at 10 stars that all had major work done on their teeth in order to give themselves perfect smiles. Whether they had major cosmetic dental work done or they simply sought out laser teeth whitening, the changes are incredible. Read on, the list may surprise you!

Miley Cyrus

Miley Cyrus is the bad girl of music right now but at 22 years old it wasn’t that long ago when she was the innocent young actress. Daughter of country singer Billy Ray Cyrus, Miley was launched into the industry seemingly from birth. She started her career as an actress in projects like Big Fish and Doc before finding fame in Hannah Montana. It seems that becoming a leading lady at a young age really enhanced her need for a great smile. While Cyrus had the typical teeth of a youngster who didn’t care quite enough, it wasn’t long until she was flashing a perfect set of teeth. Now Cyrus is known for her insane photo shoots and her bad girl publicity stunts. She still sings too, we think. In any event, Cyrus is showing off a smile that would make the most arrogant cosmetic dentists proud.

Tom Cruise

Tom Cruise is the action star that actually runs. That means something. In an industry filled with bloated, lazy, and self serving actors, Cruise puts everything into each role that he takes on. He’s known throughout the world as a heartthrob thanks to his chiseled good looks, leading man jaw, and beautiful smile. Cruise has the kind of intensity and confidence that most men can only dream of. But he didn’t always look like that. Well, of course he always had that Tom Cruise body but he didn’t have that same swagger and most of the problem came down to his teeth. Despite his good genes, Cruise had a set of teeth that were angular and discolored. It wasn’t until he underwent some dentistry cosmetic changes that he was able to fully embrace his role as a leading man and an action star. Now with over three decades of experience in the industry, Cruise is still lighting up the screen.

Ben Affleck

Ben Affleck rose to prominence as an actor in the 1993 hit film Dazed and Confused. It was only a few years later that he would hook up with Kevin Smith for Chasing Amy and Dogma and the rest was history. His partnership with Matt Damon on the screenplay Good Will Hunting gave him major clout and he’s done nothing to turn away from that success. Now Affleck is one of the most respected writers and directors in Hollywood and he still finds time to star in some great productions like Gone Girl and the new Batman franchise. In order to become the leading man that gave him his fame, Affleck had to lean into the look. In the early 90’s Affleck still had a less refined look about himself and it extended to his teeth. A trip to the dentist for some laser teeth whitening, as well as some dental implants, and he was flashing a grin as bright as any in Hollywood.

Zac Efron

For most women in the world there are two different classes of men: Zac Efron and everyone else. Efron was born in San Luis Obispo, California and he didn’t take long to find his way down to Hollywood. The 27 year old actor quickly rose to fame as a teen idol in the Disney film High School Musical. It wasn’t long until he was blowing up big screens and small screens alike. Today he is one of the brightest stars in Hollywood thanks to his charisma and incredible good looks. However, there was a rough spot in his early teen years that could have delayed or inhibited everything that followed after. We love Efron, seriously, but he had one messed up mouth as a child. Replete with a gap tooth and poor form, Efron had to seek dental work before the rest of Hollywood would accept him as a true heartthrob.

Hilary Duff

Much like our aforementioned superstar, Hilary Duff came into the entertainment business as a younger. She was born in 1987 but by 2011 she had a leading role on a hit television show by the name of Lizzie McGuire. From there Duff went on to star in a slew of family friendly films before sort of slowing down at the ‘old age of 27’. Duff is an incredible singer and has her own musical career that coincides with her acting. Hilary is regarded as one of the few child stars that grew up to be as level headed as any other normal person. As a kid Duff faced a lot of scrutiny for not looking the part of a perfect young starlet. In fact, Duff had to resort to cosmetic dentistry in order to fix a smile that would not be acceptable in Hollywood. While her smile wasn’t broken, it was still not perfect enough for the world of entertainment. Since getting it fixed Duff has been at no lack for work.

Cheryl Cole

Cheryl Cole was in Hollywood for a minute before she was the ‘it’ girl of Hollywood. The young singer first rose to fame in 2002 when she tried out for the show Popstars. She went on to win a spot in the group and had a run of success by releasing 20 straight hit singles. She’s got a slew of musical award achievements next to her name and now she is a commodity as a television host. She is also one of the prettier stars in Hollywood but her smile wasn’t always so perfect. As a starlet trying to break through into the world of entertainment, Cole was held back only by a less than perfect smile. And by less than perfect we mean that her smile was only an 8.5/10 instead of the 10/10 that it is today. Still, Hollywood demands perfection and Cole complied. Her career thanks her for it.

Chris Rock

Chris Rock got his start in Hollywood back in the late ’80s and early ’90s but it wasn’t until his stint on the classic Saturday Night Live that he started to blow up. He co-starred alongside some of SNL’s best in Chris Farley, David Spade, Adam Sandler and Rob Schneider. From there he went on to become a famous stand up and one of the most profitable comedians working in the business. Most recently he has been seen in the Grown Ups franchise alongside the former SNL stars we listed above, sans Chris Farley who sadly passed away. Despite all of this success Chris still felt self conscious about his admittedly imperfect smile. So he went on to change it. Before photos show that he needed, at the very least, some braces. Instead Mr. Rock went on to get a great pair of veneers from one of the best cosmetic dentist practices available. You can easily see how cosmetic dental work can change a smile.

Matthew Lewis

Matthew Lewis struck wizard gold when he landed the part of Neville Longbottom in the hit cinematic series, Harry Potter. Little did he know it at the time but Neville, an ungainly back of the pack sidekick, would grow into one of the most important characters in the world of Harry Potter. Lewis had to, for almost a decade and seven movies, be the shlumpy friend in the group. He was forbidden from losing too much weight and the wardrobe team even put him in intentionally ugly clothing. Neville wasn’t allowed to shine on screen until the last installment, where he grew into a heroic figure. Lewis mirrored those decisions in his real life, as well. As a child his smile was broken beyond repair. He desperately needed braces that he never got and his teeth were a bit of a wreck. As soon as he could, the star actor fixed his smile with a gleaming set of veneers. Now he is one of the most attractive post-Harry Potter stars in the entire cast.

Morgan Freeman

The man who would go on to play God needed a little help from the man himself. Morgan Freeman is known for his smooth and lush voice but it was his smile that people first noticed before his fame. Freeman had an unkempt set of teeth that really distracted from his otherwise deep presence of character. Freeman didn’t care for many years until finally he was ready to make the change. Now Morgan is sporting a set of perfect teeth to match that golden voice of his. While Freeman has tapered off in his older age, the work he has done still stands alongside those of other Hollywood greats.

Billie Joe Armstrong

At one point in time Billie Joe Armstrong was the face of the modern punk movement. He was born in raised in Rodeo, California and it was there that he rose out of the gutter to bring his unique brand of punk to the masses alongside his buddies in the classic band Green Day. Early pictures show Armstrong as fully immersed in the punk image: he’s dirty, dressed in dark, covered in tattoos, drugged up, and adorned with some of the ugliest teeth to come out of Cali. For years Billie Joe held up a middle finger to conventional music star looks and kept his teeth as is until abruptly he changed them. Billie Joe must have gotten some of the best dentist cosmetic work done on this list. His new teeth look natural and flashing any time he spares a smile. Now a parent and an older man, his music has softened throughout the years.
